UNBOXING
Mmmm Box within a box.
The padding is awesome but the manual is very thin, good thing I speak fluent geek and don’t need a manual.
The PSU is wrapped in what appears to be a nice soft pouch and the cables are in a plastic canvas pocket. On closer inspection they are a bit cheap, shame I needed a new camera bag.
The manuals are small and forgettable.
THE UNIT
The PSU is wrapped tightly in plastic.
Basic looking, was expecting more bling for the price, have they packed the right one?
Yep, it is the AX860i. Self test button, comm port and modular plugs. At least with a combined 12V rail I don’t have to Google for days to try and determine what rails the 6 pin PCI-E plugs were connected to on my old PSU. I should have enough Amps for another 680 for sure.
Voltages as expected.
THE CABLES
Loads of cables here.
Strange labels that don’t match the modular PSU.
The Corsair Link dongle.
Below is a comparison of the modular cables that I would need (top) compared to my non modular old PSU (bottom). The new PSU cables could stretch as far as the old ones but they had a bit of spring back memory in them.
THE TARGET SYSTEM
Now here is a crappy photo of the system that this PSU will power. Yes it is messy and the zip ties dangling fans really do work on a hot summer's day. Specs: i7 2600, 16Gb DDR3, Geforce GTX 680, 5x magnetic HDD’s, 1x SSD, 1x Optical and 7 case fans.
