Software, SMS, Logos
Software
Next in line was the handset manager software. Download from the Internet or use what's on the included CD and then install. Installation purely consisted of pointing it at a directory to install to. My first thoughts bordered around "I bet that I'm going to need LogoManager..." - but I figured that I'd give the handset manager software a try, hoping to avoid the expense of purchasing additional software.
The phone and receiver having a little chat.
Shortly after starting up the software with the phone in IR communication mode, it was only about 5 seconds before the software detected the phone and started to download the phonebook.
Once finished, it then presented a list everyone who I had stored both in the sim card's memory and the phone's memory. From the phone book screen entries can be added, deleted, edited and moved between the phone's memory and SIM card's memory. The synchronization option also allows Microsoft Outlook contacts and your phone's phonebook entries to be synchronized. Check a box, hit an arrow and the contact can be sent to the phone or uploaded to Outlook. Probably the most useful thing out of all this is being able to save the phone book from your phone to a file - very useful in the event of losing your phone. Been there, done that of course - hopefully someone on the train that day enjoyed their new 3210.
Part of the SMS functionality includes being able to download and send SMS messages. Downloading the messages from the phone automatically stores them locally, without the need to manually save them to a file. As demonstrated below it's not perfect, and resulted in what appeared to be just the first line of the SMS messsage plus a bit more being displayed on the SMS utility. At my request for an SMS message, Sciby volunteered. Unfortunately, he sent that. Can't win em all.
The software couldn't create SMS messages to be stored in the inbox of the phone. You can create, copy and move messages but these are stored locally and not within the phone. So there go my aspirations of editing my inbox to have Sciby confess his want for some neons to put on the underside of his car.
Next off the bat is the calendar synchronization ability. If you use your phone for appointment management, etc then you'll find this to be immensely useful. Contents of the Microsoft Outlook calendar are transferred to the phone, and vice versa, enabling easy managements of your appointments and reminders.
Major Feature #4 is picture editing. Caller group logos, operator logos, picture message pictures and startup logos can all be edited.
Also included a la LogoManager is the ability to edit pictures from inside the program. Being the motivated person I am some of the time, I instead decided to upload wild's operator logo. Uploading it was easy enough - click the Operator Logo tab, and click the Update button up top. Voila!
Not too shabby.
Another feature which I really liked from LogoManager was being able to send logos to other people. Thankfully, this function is included with the handset manager software.
The last feature of the software is the ubiquitous ringtone editor - one of the most efficient ways to have people rolling their eyes at you. Easily done either through scrolling through every damn tone in the phone, or by having someone call you and start bleeping out something which vaguely resembles The Ketchup Song. This software allows you to do it. There's a composition tool for creating your own tones, uploading them - and if you want to start your own BlueSkyFrog service - sending them to other people. The program can only read .mid files. Rather convenient, since the numerous sites offering previews at "Joe's $2 per ringtone Bonza Super Service!" use .mid files as their preview mechanism. One thing lacking though, is the ability to download tones from the phone to the software, and manage the tones in the phone itself- so if someone has sent you a cool ringtone, then there's little that you can do about it - short of using LogoManager. A small oversight, but an annoying one - well, unless you have a really good ear for music and want to recreate it with the composer program.
