Installation, Performance, Conclusions

Installation:
Installation is a piece of cake. Mount it, plug it in and then sit back with a beverage of choice. Demonstrated below is the camera's ability to get the colours wrong. But still, it does look good when actually mounted in a case:

Performance:

Visually, the fan performs quite well. The LEDs used are bright but not that bright. I’d say that they’re probably on par with the LEDs used on the front of Lian Li cases. They light the fan up quite well and provide just a bit of ambient light, but brighter would have been nicer.

In terms of performance, the "feel test" (very technical - it involves holding your hand in front of the fan) reports the fan as doing as well as the CCFL fan. Motherboard Monitor reports the fan as doing approximately 2800RPM. This is pretty close to the listed spec of 3000RPM. The noise I can’t measure, but I’d say it’s comparable to an average 80mm fan. It’s not annoying and often I don’t notice the noise. Whatever you choose to mount the fan against will have the largest bearing on what sort of noise is produced. Things such as shrouds to distance the fan from the case, or wire-thin grills will help greatly with any fan.

The LEDs are joined by a ribbon with a few circuit traces on it. The width of this strip could have been smaller, as when the fan is on you can usually see the strip quite clearly. If these were narrower then I think the fan would be improved greatly. But if you never see the edges of the fan (say in the front of the case) then this obviously won't affect you.

Here are a few misc pictures of the fan:

Conclusion:

If you are looking for a bit of light to spruce up your case and find that a CCFL is too dazzling and are limited with space in your case, then it's hard to go wrong with one of these fans. What makes them even more difficult to pass up is the price point - $10 is cheap in anyone's language. For your money you get a nice kit with attention to detail where it counts.

PC Range sell these fans for AUD $10 a pop. It’s hard to go wrong at that price. For the bang for buck, quality and obvious aesthetics, these fans are definitely worth considering. If red/blue/purple is not your thing, PC Range also sell a blue-only version of the fan.
