lame 3.98.2:
This benchmark only loads one core; hence clock speed and core efficiency will be the main deciding factors in the performance of each particular CPU. The X2 550 has an extra edge over the Athlon II here, beating it by 5% with only a 3.3% clock speed advantage. As far as I know these cores are logically the same, so the difference is most likely due to the inclusion of Level 3 Cache on the Phenom II range.
Handbrake 0.9.1:
This time around the Phenom II scores a massive win against the Athlon II, romping out to a 15% advantage. Handbrake utilises multiple threads, and as these threads chew through data, any little gain attributable to cores accessing data through an on-die cache, rather than the relatively slow RAM, is magnified when the task is a long one like ripping DVD's.
ConvertXtoDVD 3.1.0.24:
The results of this test are not surprisingly quite similar to the previous one, as both tasks spend the majority of their time transcribing video from one codec to another. The Phenom II agains outperforms its clock speed advantage in comparison to the Phenom II, although the victory is a little less pronounced this time, at 10%.
