GIGABYTE HD 6970 OC 2GB
Date 6th April 2011
Author DiGiTaL MoNkEY
Editor James "Agg" Rolfe
Manufacturer GIGABYTE

Synthetic Benchmarks:

Benchmark: 3DMark Vantage and 3DMark 11
Score: GPU/Graphics Score Only - Higher is Better.

Benchmark: Unigine Heaven Benchmark
Score: Average Frames per Second (FPS) - Higher is Better.

Noise and Temperature Results:
Noise measurements were taken with a digital sound meter approximately 3cm away from the video card fan, reducing the ability of other components such as the CPU or PSU fans to interfere with the final results. Software used for stressing was 3DMark Vantage, looped until the sound level was stable and stopped rising.

Temperature readings were taken at an ambient temperature of approximately 22 degrees Celsius, on a open test bench with the fan set to auto. Load and idle temperatures were monitored by MSI's Afterburner utility. Software used for stressing was 3DMark Vantage, looped until the temperature was stable and stopped rising.

Conclusions:
GIGABYTE's HD 6970 OC substantially improves on AMD's original reference design thanks to their WINDFORCE X3 cooling solution and custom PCB with upgraded power circuitry, and while out of the box the overclock is somewhat mild, it still is an improvement on the standard frequencies which is always a bonus. On the other hand, overclocking did help us improve on the factory clocks boosting the core speed to stable 950 MHz and a speedy 6280 MHz on the memory, and although no overvoltage settings were available with the software available today, it does tend to be a common sight for a lot of non-reference designs to be without such feature. So If you can get past the inability to manually adjust voltages, you will be rewarded by a product that offers impressive load temperatures and noise levels - matching and even exceeding some of the more bulky cooling solution we've seen on a graphics card. The GIGABYTE HD 6970 OC is available to purchase at PC retailers around Australia, and comes with a locally supported 3 year warranty.
