Newbie race No2 : update...
ezee has invited all you new folders out their to get a second newbie race to 10k started.

As new folders and members of the OCAU # 1 Team, you may not yet have experienced the excitement of pitting your skills and resources against your peers.

I highly recommend this competition to you.

The first newbie race produced (directly and indirectly) a few ot the team's newer rising stars - Buzz_Puppy, Origami_Army and Ozmund, all ex-newbies and joint winners of MVN (most valuable newbie award)

It also produced some steady and reliable producers like rooboy and others.

Do you have what it takes to make a mark?

My suggestion is an informal comp open to any who started folding on or after 1 July 2004 and/or who are reasonably new and have fewer than 2000 points.

Others outside these parameters are free to join, but I may apply a handicap to ensure no walkovers.

I will keep a running score and, if enough interest, I'm sure our fearless leader will add to the gauntlets.

Hands up all competitive newbies

FBOX donations: update...
We are running short on CPU's and motherboards and DDR memory to make up FBOXes. I have just finished FBOX23 and if we get the motherboard from paady, FBOX24 should be ok.

Tired has donated a Asus P4PE which is looking to mate with a nice spare socket 478 P4 that someone has.

Plus Corp gave us a MSI 850 Pro (MS6339) which takes a socket 423 P4.

Other than that the cupboard is bare for future builds. Also I need a few standard copper cored AMD HSF's for FBOX24 and future AMD FBOXes.

HDD's, video cards, NIC's, PSU's CDROMS and floppy drives are taken care of for a while.

FBOX thread.

New Folding Client: version 5 has been released...

Version 5 is out of beta and is available for download from Stanford. Our thread is here and the release announcement is here. Also there is a new version of EM3 to go along with the new client, thanks Larry.

The v.5.00 client is now on the main download page for Windows and Linux. We'll turn to Macintosh now. Thanks go to all those who helped with testing and giving feedback, which is the main reason it's turned out well. The only changes from the Prerelease are that the release will not expire and that the Windows Console fixes an issue where certain methods of launching the program would result in an improper service install.

The full v.5 change log can be viewed by clicking on the appropriate version number link on the download page (
http://folding.stanford.edu/download.html ).

5.00 Changes:
- Collection server support. If a client finishes a work unit from
a Work server with this feature enabled, then if 2 upload
attempts to that server fail, the client will return to the
work unit to a Collection server. Pending credit will be given
for the unit, becoming final when the Work server comes back up
and verifies what the Collection server has received. All work
servers will eventually be associated with a Collection server,
  and many already are.
- Configuration option to allow downloads and uploads greater
than 5 MB in size, which some new projects will require due
to the size of what they are simulating.
- G@H configuration option reworded to be "No deadline" option.
- Print executable name and launch directory to log.
- Fix for bug where queue slot could get stuck "Fetching"
- MyFolding links updated.
- Configuration option to pause work when the computer is using
  battery power (for laptops).
- Behavior in response to a shutdown or logoff of the system should be
  improved (exiting nicely).
- Console: Built in service installation support through Configuration, to
have the program automatically begin at machine startup. If one wishes, the
service can be further configured and interacted with through the Services
tool (GUI) that can be accessed through the Windows Settings (under
Administrative Tools in 2000/NT). The Sc command line tool may also be used.
There are known issues with the Net tool.
- GUI: Larger window size and more informative display.
- GUI: Screensaver configuration option.
- GUI: Print a message to FAHlog.txt when ask to network.

30 Day Time Trial: is underway...
The 30 Day Time Trial is under way (started yesterday) with 34 contestants vying for the Top Trialler Title. Here is the commentary for the past 2 days...

Day1

ezee and Falls launched off the start line and are sprinting away from the rest of the field, they are followed some distance back by Caillin and Origami Army fighting for third. The rest of the field are tightly bunched fighting for position behind the leaders. Eltoro and team clown got checked early and are stuck in the pack. FaTs and djr missed a gear and are looking for a way through to the front. looktall, Lithium and hj missed the start and have stalled on the line.

Day2

Day 2 sees ezee maintain his lead only just though, Falls falls to third with Caillin slipping in second behind ezee after a good run down the main straight. ZeonX had a good lap and made up some ground on the leaders and moves into 5th right behind peterc who also made up some ground with some great overtaking moves. xylus, tuapui and Michael0Myth put in some good times as well and are catching up to the main bunch at the front. Datsun 1600 found another gear and is putting in some respectable times for an out dated model. RAT had to pull into the pits with a flat and poor old hj still hasnt moved off the start line with his engine refusing to fire.

Here is a Chart to give this trial a graphical representation.
