| Folding on the News Page: welcome to the world of Folding ... |
|
We haven't mentioned
Folding@Home
on the news page for
a little while. If you haven't heard of it, it's a
distributed-computing project that simulates protein behaviour.
This research can be used to help find cures for many diseases,
including cancer. Installing a background task on your PC allows
Folding@Home to use your idle CPU cycles - the ones you're not
using - to process this data. There is a worldwide race to produce
the most data, and currently OCAU's team is the #1 team in the
world.
My doctorate is in protein structure, and for my first post here I just wanted to thank all of you for contributing to the solution of a problem that really is the Holy Grail of modern biochemistry. Every day I work on drug design problems that benefit in a critical way from knowing the shapes of the proteins that drugs interact with. But the vast majority of proteins have unknown structures, so folding is the only way to predict these shapes. I've studied the methods that the Pande lab is using in TINKER and GROMACS and I'm confident that these people are seriously on to something by relying on many short simulations in parallel instead of a few long ones. After working in a protein-folding lab that was doing Alzheimer's work, I can assure you first-hand that your cycles are being invested in good methods and a fine cause. Thanks again, folders! That statement sort says it all and yet again confirms that the Folding@Home project is on the right track and working towards producing some results in the near future that will benefit everyone. For some more reading on what this project is all about check out this article by The Howard Hughes Medical Institute.

| OCAU Christmas FBOX: Win an AMD64 3000 Folding Machine ... | ||||||||||||||||||
|
To celebrate
Christmas 2004 the Overclockers Australia Folding@Home team have a
special Christmas FBOX to giveaway. The XFBOX (XMAS FBOX) is a fully
optioned machine with a big HDD, video card and a DVD burner. The
same principals as the BYO's would apply ie a $10 donation to the
FFF would get you one number in the draw (of course if you want to
donate more you are free to do so, each additional $10 will get you
one extra number in the draw) and if we get about 100 entries that
should cover the cost of the box and any left over would go in the
FFF for the next BYO's or FBOX component purchases. Also all
participants will go into a special BYO FBOX draw early in the new
year along with any eligible FFF donors.
So for your $10 donation you get 2 chances to win a prize. Thanks to the great generosity of the Overclockers Australia sponsors who have donated some nice gear to go along with the bits that we will buy with the donations. Thanks to Computer Alliance, PCRange, CoolModz and Plus Corporation and our very own Datsun 1600 for supporting the Folding team. XFBOX003
Bonus Prize
Entry into a special
BYO FBOX draw to be held early 2005. One entry per person along with
the eligible donators from the BYO FBOX list. Donations will be received up to Friday the 24th of December with the draw being held on Saturday the 25th of December. Check out the XFBOX forums thread for more information. XFBOX Giveaway Rules

| OCAU Christmas FBOX: great response ... |
|
We have had a great
response to the Christmas FBOX fund raiser with 25 members in with
a chance of winning XFBOX003. These generous members have donated
$780 which will make sure we have plenty of funds to continue to
build FBOXes next year. If you would like to help out and have a
chance at winning the A64 3000+ Folding machine take a look at
this thread and send me a PM and I will forward the account
details. |
