News March 2002

Friday 01/03/02

Lucus Maximus is the first that we know of to get the Mac client installed on a couple of boxen. He has it running on a new IMac G4 800Mhz and a G3 500MHz well done Lucus.

The Fastest Folding Machine competition has been widened to include all the A proteins (proteinA, proteinAnat, ProtienAg29aNat) so hop to and send them in to here.

Some news from Stanford about the results they are getting from our hard work.

FOLDING@HOME RESULTS PRESENTED AT NUMEROUS CONFERENCES

I've been on the road a lot and have in the last few weeks presented recent results from Folding@Home at conferences at Univ. Utah, Los Alamos National Lab, Protein Folding Gordon Conference, and UCSD. Comming up this week: UCSF and the OpenEye conference. Later: UIUC.

So far, the reception has been great. It looks like people are excited about our methods and our results. We have two major results under review at top science journals. More on that as info is available.

We all got a big boost from the protein A refund yesterday and this is what they had to say about it.

Dear users,
after careful analysis (and thanks to some of your comments) we have realized that there indeed was a significant discrepancy between the units for villin and protein A. The problem is that we have not carried out the calibration for the two molecules in the same way. To
keep things fair, we have decided to update the units for protein A to 5. We will do this retroactively, so that all of protein A work gets credited 5 units, including the stuff already completed. You should see the changes in your stats very soon. Also, from now on we will
always calibrate the units relative to the villin runs, so that numbers are as internally consistent as they can be. Thanks again for your input and participation. Fold on!
Bojan, the F@H... team

The funny thing is I am still getting 3 points for all the A's that I have sent in since so I hope that they fix this situation up soon otherwise we will have to have another bitch session with them again.

A client for Macs on OSX has just been released and is should be available from here soon.

Well, it took a lot longer than we hoped, but we're releasing the OS X version today. We're still working on the install instructions, but I think it should be pretty straight forward (just download it and run it).

Thanks to all who beta tested and hung in there while we finished.

Vijay

I have been thinking about our plight and it occurred to me that some of us aren't running our machines 24hrs a day. So I thought what if we say for this weekend made a special effort and folded continuously until Monday just to see what we can do. So if you have to convince someone that its ok to leave your PC on at night or when you go out tell them that you are working on an extra special protein that cannot be stopped until it finishes on Monday. If we all do this I'm sure it will make a big difference to our output, so what do you think? Go put some sticky tape over that off button or put a sticky note on the monitor  saying "Working on special protein do not turn off" and lets kick some butt.

We lost a bit more ground yesterday, 434 points to be exact so we are now down to six days left before we are invaded and over run by the [H]. I found this interesting piece by Nostradamous while browsing the web and I thought it fitted our situation perfectly.

Century 2, Quatrain 89
One day the two great leaders will become friends,
Their great power will be seen to increase:
The new land will be at the height of its power,
To the bloody [H] the number [2] is reported.

So lets hope that Nostradamous is right.

Saturday 02/03/02

Stats update at 10pm WST we have increased our lead to 2354 which is 38 points up since 7am. So hopefully we can keep this up overnight and give the [H] team something to worry about again. Time for another inspirational Folding Quote.

"And so, my fellow Folders, ask not what your team can do for you; ask what you can do for your team..."

This chart shows how we have been caught by the [H]ardOCP team over the last 41 days. It shows how they were catching us at a great rate then something happened to slow them down and the last bit shows them picking up the pace again helped by the "A" points adjustment. One thing it doesn't show is them over taking us.

This week we had 2358 visitors.

It looks like we have a few new proteins coming our way tonight with 4 different ones so far, 2ABD,1SHF, 1UBQ and 1APS identified from 3 different sources so if you see another different one lets us know in here.

Just a little stats update so far today we have out produced the [H] team, only by 16 points but its a lot better than a loss. So keep them machines crunching and lets see if we can continue our good work.

Server 115 is back in action so if you have any outstanding WU's send them in or if you can wait they should be uploaded next time a WU if finished.

The Top 20 and Team Daily stats have been updated.

With the Fastest Folding Machine times I added who has the fastest of each processor type. The P4 situation should be filled with Maverick's P4 time yet to go in to the list. He is running his Northwood at 2.667Ghz not a bad overclock there Maverick.

Points production was down a bit because of server 115 being missing in action and the Hairpins not being able to go home after a short stay on your hard drive. So it seems likely that the change over date is going to be around the 7 March unless something extraordinary pops up and saves us, fingers crossed. Membership continues to climb steadily with another 6 newcomers yesterday and our active members past 400 for the first time ever, no doubt the "A" points credit has a bit of influence on that but we are steadily building up our production base so things are looking promising.

Monday 04/03/02

We have had confirmation from Norgs that he will be back folding soon, which is very good news indeed. But sad news to hear that BSS has had to cut back his exceptional production rate of late. Canberra College is stepping up its production this week along with Stromlo High as well. Sciby is on the verge of getting a few more machines folding when he can get his service issue sorted out. Then out of the blue comes Toca with 82 points so far for the day. Stay tuned.

We fell back a bit yesterday to the tune of 483 points which sort of undid our good work from the day before. Membership continues to rise and we are destined to hit 900 members in a day or two. Our participation rate continues to rise as well with 412 active folders partaking of a diet of various healthy WU's.

Sunday 03/03/02

After a suggestion from DonTryThis I have changed the Top 20 in the Stats Bar above to the Top 20 producers for the week. PPW = Points Per Week. It should make it more interesting for those not in the Top 20.

Looks like Statsman has gone to six hour updates if you were wondering what was going on with his stats.

Now for something completely different Google Compute. Seems like Google are getting in on the DC act as well with this new Google Compute, they have set up a team and could be a bit of competition if it takes off. Here is a snippet from their FAQ page.

Google is pleased to introduce Google Compute, a new feature for the Google Toolbar. By turning on this feature, you allow your computer to work on complex scientific problems when it would otherwise be idle. The work it does is automatically sent via the Internet to researchers who combine it with information sent by thousands of other users.

The first beneficiary of this effort is Folding@home, a non-profit research project at Stanford University that is trying to understand the structure of proteins so they can develop better treatments for a number of illnesses.

The 115 server outage is explained...

We've figured out what the problem with server 115 is - it was running a version of the server code that was incompatible with the packets the MAC OSX was sending back. We should have it all straightened out very soon (but perhaps not immediately).

This is a table with the new proteins in and the points will be updated as they are known.

Protein Points Project
2SPZ 1.29 115
2ABD 3.2 116
1APS 4.0 117
1UBQ 2.3 118
I6C 1.0 119
1SHF 1.6 120

With the new proteins the 2ABD is worth 3.2 points and is Project 116. I will make a list of the new ones and the points they are worth today.

What a great set of numbers we have today, we have out produced the second place team by 101 points for the last 24hrs, which is a great result. This was done by increasing our production rather than the [H] team dropping production, well done team. It seems like just about everybody has increased their production in the last day or so. Once again well done team this is what is needed to stay at No1.

With the new proteins seems like I have missed Project 119 so if anyone knows what its called and how many points its worth drop me a line.

Yesterdays numbers weren't that kind to us, the [H] team have gone crazy again and have produced 2331 points for the day and we managed just 1653. So that means we have a lead of less than 1000 points and less than 2 days left has No1. The [H] team picked up 27 new members yesterday which goes a long way to explaining their score. But I feel its a lot of other DC members jumping on the bandwagon for a final push over the line. Hopefully they all return to their normal projects after the event and if we maintain our membership growth like we have been doing then we will be taking back our rightful position in no time. We passed the 900 membership mark during the night and have 902 ATM, welcome to all the new members.

Tuesday 05/03/02

Lots more news tomorrow.

We increased out production slightly and [H] decreased a tad yesterday, but we still lost 390 points for the day. The race to 200,000 is pretty hot but we should still make it but by only a whisker. Our membership still grows at a great rate and we should pass 900 tonight with 899 members on the boards right now. So keep up the good work and we shall fight to keep our No1 status till the last minute.

Thursday 07/03/02

Stats update 188.3 at 21:00 WST we dropped 32.9 points over the last 3 hrs. I can feel the surge of the afterburner kicking in and its going to be a owesome ride overnight so hang on tight.

Here is a little something to think about from tuppaware. Has there ever been a better reason to fold.

The forums are busier than they have ever been so get in there and have a say and keep the hype flowing.

Another stats update we seem to have stabilized the gap and now we are 221.2 in front at 18:00 WST. So lets hope we don't go to sleep on the job over night or we will wake up with a hangover.

Stats update 14:00 WST we are now less than 200 points in front so if the afterburners are going to fire its about now that they should be lit. So if you have any spare cycles up your sleeve get them cracking for we don't want to relinquish top spot not from even 1 minute. Sciby seems to have conquered his service gremlins and is firing on all cylinders. We also have a new Super Team joining us, they are ex "Mad Onions" and are really mad about how they have been treated over there. So they joined us to help in our hour of need, so far they have recruited over 12Ghz of folding power in the name of BOOOON!!! so watch out for them screaming up the charts. We have lots of other new recruits and added boxen all the details here in a thread started by Darkness.

Folding@Home has got a plug on the MacOSX page and a quote from Vijay.

"yea, we're working with them for a brief story on their web page as well."

Vijay

News from Stanford that they are about to release an official BSD client so if that's what you are after you wont have to wait long.

Lets see now where do we start, things are happening all over the place so lets start with the stats from yesterday. As you are all aware we are just about at crunch time regarding the [H] team. They have closed to within 369 points at 7am WST. So that means within the next 24Hrs we will be the No2 team if we continue to lose ground like we have been doing. We have lifted our output to 1867 points in the last 24Hrs which is a very good sign that things are changing for the better and if what is being written in the Forums comes to being then we should be able to hold the castle against the invading [H]orde for a while longer. "Throw another lavache on the catapult" I say. Membership is going through the roof and another 10 members have joined the Fold since yesterday, welcome one and all and hang on because the ride is going to be a bit bumpy for a while.

Friday 08/03/02

We have just past the 200,000 points milestone on this eventful day. We are just 174 points behind the [H] team so keep the WU's rolling in.

Our 951st member just walked through the door in to the House of Folding, making it 16 new members in 10 hours. I would like to welcome you all to the great fight back.

Congratulations to the [H] team on attaining the the No1 Folding@Home team position, well done. The contest has been intense and fun to watch, but its not over yet and we are not giving in. We will strive to take our position back and once again reign as the Worlds Best Folding Team. We enjoyed the No1 status for 130 days and I'm sure we will have the Holy Grail back before to long. Well done to all that have contributed to the team to get us to No1 in the first place and to those that have sacrificed their own DC projects to give us a helping hand in our hour of need. They include the SlackNet guys from SETI and the GenomersComeToSaveOurAss team from you guessed it the Genome team, also the ex "Onion" guys who have just formed the BOOON!!! team. Thank you once again.

Our output has been at an all time high over the last couple of days and it shows no sign of faltering, in fact it should continue to increase substantially over the next few days. This is due to a lot of hard work in other forums and groups by many people spreading the folding word. Membership increased again substantially yesterday by the addition of 23 new folders to give us a total of 935. Welcome to you all.

Saturday 09/03/02

We have just produced our highest single days production with exception going to the abnormal stats dumps like the Protein A points refund. We managed to crunch our way through 2,203 points yesterday, only 256 less than the [H] mob. If you check the 7 day production graph you can see something interesting going to happen if we maintain our growth. So lets keep those computers churning out the WU's and like I have said in the forums its takes a while to get the flywheel turning at top speed and once it is, there will be no stopping us.

Another big jump in membership again yesterday with 28 new members jumping into battle and heading straight for the front line. So to all the new folks don't forget to spread the word and try and get your friends, neighbours and even the cat folding to help us get back to where we belong.

Sunday 10/03/02

Since this mornings stats update we have closed to gap to the [H] team to 90 points at 15:00 WST. So at that rate No1 will be rightfully ours before morning. That is a fantastic effort by all since Friday morning when the [H]orde stole our crown. Well done everyone your contribution in the last few days has been magnificent and once again we will be known has "The worlds Best Folding Team"

I will update all the usual weekend stats tomorrow.

Good news all round today with our team just passing the 1000 member mark at 10am WST. We had 3 new members and so the honour must be shared between maxdamage or Pengo, a big welcome to the team to you both.

Some very good news has just come in with the return of Norgs the world's no1 individual producer. He has dumped 170 points in 2 hours from 7am to 9am WST. This is what the whole of the team has been waiting for and the [H] team have been dreading happening. Its good to have you back Norgs.

Another lap record for us yesterday with 2318 points produced, unfortunately the [H] team upped the ante as well with 2548 points produced. So we are heading in the right direction even though the gap has increased to 602 points. Membership has shot through the roof with 34 new members on our list. This is an incredible amount of people that have joined in the last week. Membership sits at 997 and 1000 is only a few updates away. Who would have thought 1000 members in our team, a very big welcome to you all and may your stay in the Worlds Biggest Folding Team be long and productive.

Monday 11/03/02

Position update: Its been an interesting day so far with the lead swapping twice already and I'm sure the swapping will continue for some time to come. We took the lead at 15:00 WST and then the [H] team took it back 2 hours later and now at 20:00 we are back in the lead again with a 65 points advantage.

I have finally managed to up date the Weekly Stats , Daily Stats , Top 20 and Page Hits. With the teams activity rate at Statsman being a bit screwed up at the moment I have left it out of the Team Weekly stats for this week. The reason being that Statsman used to round the points score up or down to the nearest whole number and now he has them set to two decimal places. So he adjusted the scores accordingly and many people who weren't active suddenly became active and we gained about 250 more active members.

What a difference a day makes and what a difference Norgs makes. We have closed the gap to 112 points as of 7am WST and we got a bit closer during the day but the [H] guys steadied a bit and pulled it back out over 100. So its a big welcome back to our No1 points man, Norgs who has been missing in action for a while but what a grand entrance he made yesterday. So with another day like yesterday we should be back at No1 sometime today.

As you can see with the screeny from yesterday we passed the 1000 member milestone which is a tremendous achievement and we then went on and added another 21 members after that. So that makes another 24 new folders to bolster up the ranks.

Tuesday 12/03/02

The [H]ardOCP team have had some front page news over at their website trying to drum up support for the team. I guess they now realise we are a tough nut to crack and that we will never give in.

First, there was Folding, and our team dominated that distributed computing exercise with ferocity.  Folding2 has not been such an easy row to hoe.  The Overclockers from Down Under have been a worthy opponent.  Still, the [H]orde has accomplished their goal of NUMBER ONE IN THE WORLD when it comes to Folding2.  Guess that means OCOZ is going to have to change their logo?  (Actually I just checked and we have fallen back to #2!  This shows that the battle is never truly over!)  Check out HardFolding to learn how to team up with the [H]orde.

I have made a new Protein Page that is easier to read and has the newer proteins in it.

Amfibius has written a quick guide on how to set your computer up to autodial in Windows XP when a WU is ready to be uploaded. Have a look here.

The bandwidth question has popped up again in the Forums. Each WU uses approximately 300 to 400 Kb of bandwidth, so you need to average the amount of Work Units you are doing per day to get an idea of how much folding is going to eat in to your allowance.

A couple of programs have arrived on the scene. First up we have a Electron Microscope Viewer 3, this program is not to be confused with the Electron Microscope the monitoring program. So if you are using the console version and would like to see what is happening behind that DOS box this is for you. It was created by Luke Perry of the [H] team and here is the post from the [H] Forums

Since I never use anything but the console version of F@H2 I like to see just exactly what is going on with the folding process. I wrote a viewer for F@H1 but everything is different in F@H2 so it needed to be modified. Well, it is pretty much finished and I added a couple of extra features. You can set it to track the current molecule file. It will time the update periods and display the latest picture of the molecule. This is not Electron Microscope the tracking program, this is just a viewer. Put this program in the F@H work folder and run it there. You can launch multiple copies of this program. Put the program in a network computer folding work folder and start it from your main computer... you can watch as many systems as you want... it will stop polling a network computer that has lost its connection and put an error message on your EM Viewer window.
Have fun.

The other program is called KDFold version 2.2 and is a monitoring program that can be used on Folding@Home 1 and 2 and also Genome@Home. This is what Corruptor from the DSL Reports Team Helix, he also used to fold for the [H] had to say about this new version. The Forum thread is here

1. Added FTP upload so that you can upload the html stats to your website or anything else for that matter.
KDFold will upload at stat update or set number of hours.
2. Fixed the ever elusive cant open progress.txt error On distributed folding clients.
3. Serious documenation update and web site updates. Thank MstrBlstr for some of these fine additions.
4. Left click shows the client config file with your project settings for each client. This way you can verify your on the right team etc.. (See picture below)
5. Code Cleanup has started as we have hit a fork in the road.

Good news this morning with the No1 position still in our keeping but not by much, 28 points is all we are leading by and so its going to be another nerve racking day to see who is in front at every stats update. Another good days production by us with 2,749 points but the [H] mob upped theirs to 2,609 points. So we can't get complacent and fall asleep at the wheel,  we must continue to improve our output to stay ahead and increase the lead.

Membership was boosted by the arrival of another 22 recruits for the frontline.

Wednesday 13/03/02

I was just going through the members list and I thought why don't I add all the different groups up and see who has the most points and members. So here we have the Overclockers Australia Folding Affiliates Challenge to see which group can come out on top. Atomic has the most members by far and AusGamers the most points. Do you want to win a CPU or a motherboard to put in that case you have lying around? Well our folding friend VooDoo over at the DDRZone is giving away 4 CPU's and a motherboard to people who post in the DDRZone Forums in this thread, so go register and post away and don't forget to get it folding straight away.

Statsman  hasn't updated for a while so the Top 20 and Folding Club will have to wait till he puts up new numbers.

Now gather round kiddies we have a little story to tell. This comes from sciencewhiz who has put a few words together rather brilliantly.

There was movement in the forums as the word had passed around,
that the [H]orde had folders showing lots of class.
And we'd better not get lax as they had gained a lot of ground.
Too soon we could be shown their [H]airy arse.

Dump the seti and don't linger. Help us give the [H]orde the finger.
Sure the RC5 is cool, but what's it for?
Add your cycles to the fight of Aussie Overclocker might.
All cpu's will not be shown the door.

It's a proud Aussie tradition, volunteering for a mission.
Bollocks called, and so they answered, "Yep, we're in!"
And into the ring we danced to find the [H]orde had still advanced.
It will soon become a [H]osing. Lets begin.

While the problems all got sorted still the statsman site reported
that the [H] were coming fast just like the Borgs.
It was in that darkest hour, standing calling for more power, when someone said
"Hey, where the hell is Norgs?"

Then Norgs stood fast from up amongst the battlements on high.
He threw a wave to zzsstt who'd held the fort.
And he then unfurled the standard of the army he commanded,
while he sucked down a quick beer that someone bought.

Then he threw aside the tinny and he gave his whip a crack,
and his army of computers bent their tiny little backs,
while all the heads that once were bent in order that they pray,
looked up and cheered now that they'd seen that Norgs had joined the fray.

Then with baited breath we waited as the stats became updated,
and we found the [H]orde had barely had a win.
The c[h]eeky little bastards turned and waved as they crept pass us.
It's a big mistake to rub small victories in.

We Overclockers took it badly and we set about quite madly
finding cycles where we had not looked before.
If you think that I am joking, notice that my box is smoking
and the fire extinguishers kept behind the door.

This story is not finished as the [H]orde has not diminished.
A cpu not folding is a sin.
ex seti folders can remind us those damn Aliens can find US.
A cancer cure's the fight I want to win

With that front page news over at the [H] bunker yesterday I emailed Kyle to let him know that we are known as "OCAU" not "OCOZ" and that the logo was fine because we weren't going to permanently lose our No1 spot and this is what he had to say.

"Dream on OZ boy!"

Cheeky bugger I say so lets get those whips cracking and fold like you have never folded before and we will never give in until the Folding Grail is safe in our hands once more.

So here is another quote to get you motivated from the Book of Folding Quotes this time from Winny

"Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts." Winston Churchill

There goes No1 again, this race is getting more like a tug of war every day. With each side taking turns at leading while the other team sleeps. So the only answer is to leave your PC on overnight so we don't slip back in the wee hours. Having said that our output was down a bit from the day before so we can't get complacent just yet. As we have be doing for the past few days membership had another big jump, this time up by another 17 members.

Thursday 14/03/02

Welcome to the late edition.

I have put up a poll in the forums asking Where do you Fold from. With the results I we make a map of where we all live and which state has the most folding members.

Stats from yesterday, well we didn't gain much in fact we lost ground a fair bit our with our output down 71 points but [H] put in a record effort and picked up 139 on the previous day. Making our overall deficit 392 points as of this morning 07:00 WST. Membership continues to rise at a good rate with another 12 members.

Friday 15/03/02

Welcome to the late edition No2.

The [H] team are the first team to break the 3000 points mark for one day in Folding@Home 2, so congratulations goes out to them. We managed a slight increase to 2596 points which is still good going but we need a few more of the none active types to pull their finger out if we are to start matching the top team. Membership is at a healthy 1086 and still rising rapidly so hopefully we can continue this growth rate and start to gain on the [H]orde.

Saturday 16/03/02

The guide to 2.19 console has been done, view here.

The poll in the forums is coming along nicely but we have only got 131 votes in so for and with nearly 600 members active there are still a quite a few people missing. As you can see Queensland has a slight edge over New South Wales and Victoria. Funny thing is we have more Kiwis than crow eaters folding. Go vote now and get your state in front.

Version 2.19 of the folding client has gone gold and is available in the usual place. I will stick a guide up sometime this weekend. There is also a 2.19a client for the Mac folks available, I'm not sure what the difference is between that and the 2.19 version. As has been pointed out in the Forums dont upgrde the client if you are in the middle of a WU, wait until it starts a new one. Also if you are having no problems with your current client you don't have to upgrade to the new one.

I have updated the Top 20, Team Daily stats and Page Hits. Talking of page hits we almost had 1000 hits for the day on Tuesday with 948 and a week total of 5066 which I think is not bad at all.

We continue to increase our output and yesterday was a good day with 2670 points produced with a deficit to the [H] team of only 143 and that's with Norgs only putting in 34 points, so when he fires again the afterburners will propel us close to the 3000 points mark. Membership climbed to over 1100 yesterday with a gain of 15 new members. Statsman has returned to an accurate activity rate after the points adjustments left the one week window and we now have 582 folders active a rise of 127 for the week and a 52.8% activity rate. Well above the [H] team who have 504 active folders and a 48.1% activity rate. I can see in the next week a much closer race for No1, so hang in there and the world can get back to its normal self again with the Overclockers Australia Folding Team on top.

Sunday 17/03/02

Now here is a quote from a bloke who knows nothing about folding but has a good idea what stats are about

"Statistics are like miniskirts: they give you good ideas but hide the important things" Aberdeen manager Ebbe Skovdahl

Seems like we are getting help from all sorts of places have a look at this. It must come from someone who doesn't know his .com from his .com.au or his clock from his cock.

I have put up a graph on the right of this page and a link to the poll for your folding home base so it will eventually catch as many people as possible. Currently Queensland is still leading by one vote from New South Wales. We have had so far 162 responses and one from the USA from purge241 who used to live in Sydney and recently moved to California.

Update: Looks like we have an Italian folding participant, welcome JAN THE LAST.

There are some quick GNRA Hairpin ORC proteins floating around that belong to Project 312 and Project 313. They are both worth 0.5 points and the deadline is 36Hrs.

The stats are a mixed bag from yesterday, the good news is the rate at which we are falling behind is decreasing mainly due to the [H] dropping their production level. If we had kept our production rate at the same level as the day before we would have gained on them for the day. We had reduced output by 74 points and the [H] had reduced output of 150 points. So today could be interesting to see what happens with the stats. Will we increase and the [H] decrease production and we start to gain or will the [H] spring back to normal production levels and pull out a bigger lead. Stay tuned to the stats channel and find out. Membership jumped to 1119 a gain of 18 members and our active members jumped by 11 to 593, so we should pass the 600 active members mark tomorrow.

Monday 18/03/02

Team Weekly stats are up.

If you were having trouble getting your WU's back to server 115 this would explain it. They should upload fine next time the client finishes a WU.

Server 115 had some internal problem over the weekend. It sometimes didn't listen to clients, and your machine was unlucky to send WU back during that period. (: It's fixed now. So should be fine.
Sorry for the inconvenience...

At last we have out scored the [H] mob, the last time we did that was on the 12th of March. Thanks mainly to a nice dump from Norgs we out produced the [H] team by 123 for the day, which reduced the lead to 923 points. Looking at the stats things seem to be stabilising and both teams are producing between the 2600 and 2800 mark each day so its going to be a hard slog to try and build a comfortable lead for either team. We gained another 14 members yesterday but lost 16 due to inactivity which is not a good sign.

Tuesday 19/03/02

Excuse me but did anybody see which way the [H] team went. One minute you are creeping up on them and the next minute nothing but dust. Sort of like Wylie Coyote and the Road Runner beep beep. The [H] team burnt rubber yesterday to the tune of 3087 points which is another lap record which stretched the gap to 1450 points an increase of 527 on the day, wow. We didn't do bad at 2560 points which is a little below our weekly average but not by a lot. Membership increased by 10 and our active members went up by 6. But it seems like the [H]orde and growing quicker than we are, which would account for some of their increased production.

Wednesday 20/03/02

We slipped further behind again yesterday but luckily it wasn't as big a fall has the day before. We are now 1821 points behind. Membership grew to 1150 with the addition of 7 more members, but our active members fell 4 to 593. We must start a new recruitment drive and get things moving again otherwise we can say farewell to our quest for world No1.

Thursday 21/03/02

We have a few sub teams on our list of members so I thought I would provide a few links to their home pages. If you have a site or a team page that you want a bit of linkage to send me an email.

Littlee has written a guide to setting up a service with sockscapv2 for Win NT and 2K. Well done Erve.

Don't forget the poll is still running on where you are folding from. This morning we had reached 299 votes (plus 3 from Italy and the US) so only half of the active members have voted. I have made up a chart with the other overseas members included.

I have removed the link to the Fastest Folding Machine that I had and replaced it with a link to Amran's page. Since Amran is the keeper of speed and his page is more up to date.

Let me clarify a few things about the Clubs we have, the Folding Club and the Milestone Club. We first started out with the Folding Club in version 1 and it was to recognise the members that reached a certain level of output in a week (any 7 day period). You only had to achieve this output once to be considered a member. Then along came the Milestone Club just recently and this was established to recognise the members that accumulated points over a period of time, as it was not possible for many people to join the Folding Club and this gave them a way of being able to show that they are contributor to our team without having a big output rate. So the Folding Club shows the rate at which you can fold and the Milestone Club shows how many points you have folded.

We had a better day yesterday with an increased output of 2644 points which is just over our 7 day average. The [H]orde are still maintaining a healthy production rate that we cant match without another big increase in out activity rate, so it looks like 2nd position for a while. Membership increased by 4 and our active members decreased by 2.

Friday 22/03/02

I did some working out of the value of proteins relative to each other. The new NativeBBA5 and the bba5 build ext proteins aren't returning the same points per cycle as the bigger A proteins and the Hairpins. This was pointed out by hallmar in this thread. Ideally both these proteins should be worth 0.8 points but I don't think Vijay is going to listen to us complaining about the 0.2 points extra we should be getting, besides it affects everybody in the long run.

Protein Points Time Secs Per Point
I6C 1 82 8200
1UBQ 2.3 243 10500
2ABD 3.2 339 10590
1APS 4 429 10700
Anat 5 556 11100
aga29Nat 5 557 11140
Hairpin 2 234 11700
NativeBBA5 0.6 90 15000
bba5 build ext 0.6 91 15100
Times taken from an XP@1600Mhz

Just another day in stats land yesterday nothing remarkable at all happened. Seems like we are about 250 to 300 points short of the [H] team per day on average. Both teams were down a bit yesterday mainly due to the smaller proteins not returning the same value per cycle as the bigger ones, see above. Membership increased by 5 yesterday and our active members dropped by 3. The [H] team have almost caught us in total membership but we still have 27 more active members.

Saturday 23/03/02

I thought I might share this with you guys. Norgs has been busy these last few hours and has been churning out the WU's at a [H] terrifying rate. In fact he has dump nearly 500 points in the last 24 hrs and that means we have closed the gap to 2350 points at 10pm WST from 2525 points this morning. I think that this is going to be a return to the old Norgs of a few weeks ago. So lets hope he can keep this rate up for a while so we can return to our old spot on top again.

The stats today are for the 22 not 24Hrs like normal so the numbers are a little bit smaller than they should be. But they still show that we are on target for a 250 point loss for the full day. We now are the worlds 2nd  largest folding team with [H] taking the membership lead by 8 members yesterday and they are only 3 active members behind us. So now is the time to get the recruiting whip out and go spread the word of Folding to one and all.

Sunday 24/03/02

Lots more news tomorrow.

Its good to wake up and see we have gained not lost points in the [H] chase. Usually we lose a lot of ground while we sleep and the [H] awaken but yesterday was different, we shortened the gap by 155 which made our deficit 2370 points. Our output was a very healthy 2843 points compared the the [H] mobs 2771. They seem to be flogging us in the membership stakes though, we had a gain of 5 new members for the day and they had 17, our active members shrunk by 4 to 570, the [H] had an increase of 12 to 583, mainly due to this thread in the [H] General Mayhem Forum I would guess.

Monday 25/03/02

Here is a quote from the ARS forum paying us a complement about our web site, nice hey. Thanks Larry Loen

I do envy the energy and quality of the Overclocker's Australia pages, though. Something to look at for our own future teams' efforts

I also added a map of the world with the location of our members that have so far responded to the poll in the forums.

I have added a guide to hiding the console with the HideIt2 program.

The Top 20, Team Weekly , Team Daily and Page Hits have all been updated.

Oh no look what the [H] are doing to our folding logo. It looks like we have got them upset by not changing the No1 bit, in a few days it wont matter anyway.

A quick note from Stanford about your client.cfg file where all your config information is stored. With an interesting part in the second paragraph.

If you correctly return WUs but don't get any credit, it's highly
possible that you have copied FAH directory to another machine. In
that way, you will entirely copy "client.cfg" file, and 2 or more
machines will have same configurations. Our server can't tell which is
which if that happens, and it assigns one WU over and over again. Of
course credit is only given to the first arriving WU. If this is the
case, please delete copied directory and use a proper installation
process or delete "client.cfg" file before starting FAH. Actually, it
is clearly documented that FAH program has to be downloaded from
authentic FAH site.

One more comment : The above was once posted by Michael months ago,
but 1 or 2 % of users are still using "copied" client.cfg file... If
you copied FAH directory to another machine instead of doing a clean
installation, please delete client.cfg file. Older servers (used until
Feb. this year) credited such users, but we decided not to do so any
more because those machines are not contributing to our calculation...

You may wonder why such clients are not regenerating new client.cfg
files. We may do that, but in order to do that, we will have to get an
identifier from your machine, which will hurt many many users'
feeling...

Another message from Stanford about the servers and what seems to be an issue with some people not being able to upload units.

We've been looking into the server issues. Young Min has done an
extensive code audit and we think it's a bug in Cosm. We have a
patched version up on the servers now and will talk to Adam about the
Cosm bug
.

Larry Perry of the [H] team has revived the Electron Microscope monitoring program for Folding@Home 2. Its is at beta stage at the moment while he irons out a few bugs. so if you want to give it a try download the latest version here http://home.attbi.com/~wxdude1/EMIII.zip. Send any bugs reports or issues here bugs@weatherxpress.com.

Currently there are two views as seen in the Pics below.
There will be other views in the future.
Ok, here's how to use it.
Unzip the files and put them anywhere.
Copy the speed.exe and the dll file to all of your F@H2 folders.
Run the speed.exe program on each computer.
This creates a CPU Type/Speed file that EM reads.
It isn't necessary, but it's fun.

Next start EMIII.
You will be shown the options menu.
Press the computer icon to browse to your Folding Folder.
Select the console exe file and press open.
You can also just double-click the file.
As in the other EM programs, you can just drag the console exe file to the text box and drop it... EM will do the rest.
Type a name in the box above the path you just created.
Press the Add button.
While EM no longer requires you to map your network drives, it's a good way to be alerted when you start your computer that systems aren't available. Your choice.

Repeat the above process as many times as you like.
There is a maximum of 50 Folding instances.
I hope your garden is that big.

Now, look at the first window below.
Most info is obvious...but a few things might need clarification.
Hopefully next to the [H] title you will see a green light after 30 seconds, if it turns red then you have a network problem on at least one of your computers. The program may seem to lock up if that happens, but Windows tries for 60 seconds to establish a connection. That connection will be disabled if there is an error. You can try to reestablish a connection by double-clicking the Computer Icon in the bad network box window. The small computer screen will be red indicating a bad connection. Currently the connection will stay red until you fix it and won't reset itself... yet. Also, you will notice a noise. Yep, it's an Elep[H]ant hollering for help...

If you want to view your score, Double-Click the little black window under the min/max buttons.

To get to the options menu press the Electron Microscope button.
To switch between the two different screens, press the "Paper" icon just above the scrollbar. Use the scrollbar buttons to move through your boxen. You can press and hold the buttons and it moves pretty quick. I'll add some better stuff later.

If for some reason a Protein picture isn't being displayed, double click the Protein Image box and unless there is something wrong, it should refresh.

If something goes wrong and you can't seem to fix it or EM doesn't respond for more than a minute, start EM with the -clear command. This will wipe all settings and allow you to start over.

That's it for now... I've got more to do.
Send Bug Reports to: bugs@weatherxpress.com
Of course you can just post them here as I will read any comments in this thread.

Have fun... Lots more coming soon.

At he moment EM3 has the [H] teams logo setup, you can change that by creating your own and by doing this

This version also will load the Team Logo's as it did before in other versions. I kept the same size and format so you can just move them over. Image can be a bmp, gif, or Jpg file. Size is 300 x 26 but it will stretch an image to fit. File name must be teamlogo.bmp/gif/jpg. Put it in the EM3 program folder. It will look for it when it starts.

Just a quick note that the quickies (NativeBBA5 and bba5_build_ext) seem to have gone and replaced by a new round of "A" proteins so that means a lull in production till we can get the big buggers processed, then expect a mass dumping from everyone.

The stats for yesterday are for 26 hrs to get back to my normal update time so they will be a bit inflated.

Another step closer to the [H] today with the gap reduced another 290 points. We had our biggest days production ever with 3296 points (26 hrs) compared the [H] with 3006 points. If we can close the gap at 200 points a day the [H] team have only 10 more days to bask in the sunshine and then its back into the shade where the mushrooms grow. Membership increased by 6 but we dropped 7 more active members from a net loss of 1.

Tuesday 26/03/02

FarQ has a cheaper version of a folding box built around a Duron, check out the Folding box page for details.

I grabbed a digital camera and snapped a few pictures of my boxen here in the house of folding and I have made up a page on the Anatomy of a Folding Box.

Just looking at that map of our folding members we need to get some Poms folding for us, any takers? Africa and Asia look likely places to recruit some members from also.

iXero has started a thread in the forums wanting to swap spare parts for setting up new folding Boxen. so if you have any bits that are lying around that you don't need or you need something to get another computer up and running have look in here Folding Exchange.

There is another beta out for EM3 (0.9.5) with quite a few fixes. Available from the same place EMIII.zip.

Well, the 0.9.5 ßeta version of EM is posted and works with Win 95/98/ME/2K/XP.
I have smashed that tracking bug flat...
Thanks for all the comments, suggestions, and bug reports.
This is the last of the Beta versions. While there may be a small bug here or there in the future, I declare this version stable and as bug free as any version can be. I'm sure something doesn't work exactly the way everyone would like, but I've investigated all bug reports and fixed all reported, and some unreported, issues.
This week I am working on enhancements to EM III.
If you have a particular wish for something you just can't live without, send an email to: EMFeatures@weatherxpress.com
I'm not promising I will add every feature that everyone suggests, but I will look at every suggestion as a possible add to the features list I am working on. The hardest thing about some of the features is the 2 OS's that don't have as much information about them as I would like. These 2 OS's are Win 2K and Win XP. While normal programs usually work fine, some of the enhanced features, like the skins issue, pose irritating problems that will take some time to investigate. I welcome all comments, questions, and critiques... just remember to just state the facts about the problem. Don't get too emotional about it and I won't either.
Also, I will be adding some help in the 1.x release so these posts won't contain instructions when that happens.

What's New:
Tracking bug fixed
About menu added.
Added protein view in small view window.
In Large view window you can change the size of the protein.
Dragging a protein file (current.xyz) to the view port and dropping it will display that protein.

There are so many new features in the next release that I'm not going to bother posting them all here. Mostly just all the features that were here in the original EM, and some new ones I didn't have time to put in the previous version.

We slowed up a bit yesterday and lost a quite a lot of ground, 204 points to be exact. But I think today we can reverse that with the A proteins about to finish on the slower boxen. Members are trickling in slowly and another 3 people have seen the light and joined the team. But our active members has taken another dive, down 4 to 565 members active.

Wednesday 27/03/02

The Folding@Home web site has had a make over and looks somewhat better. But doing so they must have taken the stats down for a while causing Statsman and Den to miss an update or two.

The stats are a bit abbreviated again today only by 2 hrs though. We lost a lot of ground yesterday to the tune of 437 points to make the gap 2721 between us and the [H]orde. We don't seem to be able to maintain the momentum for more than a couple of days and of course the [H] team won't stand still long enough so that we can get a good aim, any way there is always tomorrow. Membership picked up a bit with a little help from tuppaware doing a good job in the Whirlpool forums spreading the folding word. Welcome to the fold everyone.

Thursday 28/03/02

The stats are for 26 hrs today so are a bit bloated compared to normal. We are now 3,250 points adrift of the [H]orde and dropping fast, a deficit of 529 points is quite a big margin for one day. Most of our losses seem to come after midnight and before the sun comes up, I think someone is up to no good while we sleep. So I suggest we all stay up tonight and guard our boxen and make sure the gremlins aren't tampering with our equipment while we are snoring. Ahem I'm serious anyway membership is on the up again with an increase of 11 members and our active members went up by 3 to 567.

Friday 29/03/02

I had an idea to see how the Club members were going against their Club status and this is what I found. There is 117 members currently producing under Club status out of 176 Clubbers. The reasons for this are many and varied so I won't go into them. But one good thing is when you reach a Club you are more likely to stay active than the general folding population with 11 Clubbers or 6% non active and with some of those active within some of the sub teams we have. You can see being a Club member prolongs your folding career.

We have several Whirlpool members folding with us now, they should be distinguishable by the [WP] tag on their names. There is a thread running in the whirlpool forums  spreading the word, a big welcome goes out to all those WPers that have joined the fold.

The roadrunner strikes again yesterdays stats are back to the normal 24hrs and [H] still managed to maintain a daily output of over 3,300 points which is quite phenomenal and it is going to take a lot of hard work to peg them back at this rate. We did slight less than our weekly average which didn't help the situation any, so that all means we are 3,959 points behind. On to some good news and another 11 new members signed on the dotted line for a crack at folding, which pushed us over the 1200 member mark and our active members rose by 10 to 577 which is a good sign.

Saturday 30/03/02

Have you tried EM3 (Electron Microscope 3) yet its a nifty monitoring program made by Larry Perry and is available from here. I made a new graphic up to replace the [H] one and the logo is available here. Lots of new features are going to be included in the next release have a look here. This is what mine looks like with all computers magically shown.

News from Stanford about server 117 being down for a while, so if you have a few WU's waiting to send back don't worry the server will be back online soon.

117 is down. Should be back up in a day or so (it's Friday evening now, we'll continue work on it tomorrow).

Vijay

Some of our members who have Extremely Cooled rigs have joined up to form a new sub team called strangely enough EC. This is the thread they have going in the Extreme Cooling forum and so far they have 7 members humming along in the quest for cold WU's with more reinforcements on the way.

If you are looking for some folding related programs like Foldmonitor and you can't reach their main web site we have some local mirrors here. If there is any other files you consider worth localising let me know.

I have added a few more countries to the Where do you Fold From Poll. These are Germany, Sweden, England, USA and Greece.

Lombers has a new folding rig he would like to share with us and a neat looking setup he has to.

OK, so it may not be another 10Ghz+ of folding power, but for me it's pretty special. You are looking at a Dual 1.26Ghz PIII-S (Tualatin) machine. I currently have it up and running, and after having finished my stability testing last night, it's folding. ....

The good news is that I have it running overclocked to 1.46Ghz @ 154Mhz FSB rock stable using all default voltages, and so far it looks to be cranking out some pretty impressive folding times. In fact, it looks like it's putting my 1.33Ghz Athlon to shame. Intel did a fantastic job with these Tualatin core CPU's. As soon as it's running around the clock you will see some folding times posted for the various proteins that are floating around ATM.

Top 20 and Team Daily and Hits pages updated.

Looks like there is no stopping the [H]orde and we got flogged by another 708 points yesterday which makes us almost 5,000 points behind. Unless something drastic happens we are going to be watching them sail off into the distance. But on thing is for sure we won't be slacking off the pace that we have right now and in time we will slowly increase our output so [H] beware because if you go to sleep at the wheel we will run you down. Membership had another good day with 14 more joining us but we lost 12 active members for a net gain of 2, but we are still heading in the right direction and the gap to the [H] membership is closing once again..

Sunday 31/03/02

And now for something completely useless. I was just looking at the stats and comparing our team and the [H] mob to see where the differences were. So I broke down the stats in to groups of 20 to make it easier to handle. The second and third column are what each group produces in a week. The fourth column are the difference between the two and the fifth column is what each OCAU group produces compared to the [H] team. The closest group to producing the same has [H] is the Top 140 (120 to 140) with 98.2% and groups 80 to 200 do a fairly good job of matching the [H] team as well. The full groups lists is here (warning its big).
