OCAU News
Sunday Night (4 Comments) (link)
 Sunday, 4-December-2011  20:37:15 (GMT +10) - by Agg

OCAU recently passed the one million threads mark. While that thread itself is, err, not particularly prestigious, it's a pretty amazing milestone. :)

There's been a lot of chatter in the last few days about AMD possibly exiting the x86 market, effectively giving up their long battle with Intel, but I've held off reporting it here because I can't find anything solid about it. So, I'll simply link this thread where the ideas are being discussed - but bear in mind, it seems to just be rumour and speculation at the moment. Actually, it seems to be largely based on comments in this interview, which are not all that dramatic.

Also burning up the blogs is the issue of Carrier IQ, which suggests all Android phones are secretly recording and reporting too much information about their owners, thanks Draxonic. If you have any decently modern Android phone, it’s possible that everything you do is being recorded by hidden software lurking inside. It even circumvents web encryption and grabs everything — including your passwords and Google queries. More here.

Telstra meanwhile opened Androidland in Melbourne. Designed by Telstra in collaboration with Google and handset makers Samsung, HTC, Sony Ericsson, Motorola and LG, Androidland features displays and games that will help shoppers learn about Android phones and tablets. More here and discussion here.

IntelInside sent in this article suggesting computer experts think normal users are dumb, essentially. Pretty much been that way forever, hasn't it? :) But the point is, things should be designed more intuitively and with less reliance on people learning how to use them over time. The vast majority of users, don't know as much, don't care as much either, and this is why they don't learn as much, because to the normal person getting on with their life, that's more important than spending hours learning about computer features.

The MSDN blog has shown that Windows 8 will support very large hard drives. To start you out with a little bit of context, we will define “very large capacity” disk drives as sizes > 2.2TB (per disk drive). The current architecture in Windows has some limits that makes these drives somewhat tricky to deal with in some scenarios.

From Ashley: Britain's GCHQ - responsible for providing the country's signals intelligence - are running an online test as the first round in a recruitment drive. I doubt anyone without British citizenship would be ultimately successful in landing a job but it should pose a fun challenge for some people nonetheless.

I don't normally link funny videos as news, but this one cracked me up, so what the heck. :)
