A man killed in the recent attack on the American consulate in Libya was well-known in the world of EVE Online, and many tributes have occurred since the news was announced. EVE Online, which takes place in a simulated galaxy, center around the digital stations as bases for trade, socializing and fighting. Smith’s username “was a name you could mention in any conversation about the pointy end of EVE, without needing to explain who he was,” posted developer CCP Greyscale.

Apple announced their iPhone 5 last night - Wired are unexcited by the news. It has top-notch hardware with a zippy new A6 processor and amazing four-inch display. Its new operating system, iOS 6, is slicker than slugs on ice. And its ultra-slim body, an all-glass and aluminum enclosure, is a triumph of industrial design. There is nothing not to like about the phone. It’s aces. Just aces. And yet it is also so, so cruelly boring.

Mpot sent this in earlier but I forgot to post it - the International Space Station was saved by a toothbrush recently. Yesterday the International Space Station, having battled electrical malfunctions for over a week, was repaired by a combination that MacGyver himself would have been proud of: an allen wrench, a wire brush, a bolt ... and a toothbrush.

Trackhappy sent in this video about building a GSM network. This time on the show we continue coverage of Toorcamp 2012 - The American Hacker Camp. Darren speaks with Mathew L of Public Laboratory about Balloon mapping. Then Shadytel shares their experience building a certified experimental GSM network. Plus, why do hacker's pants weigh 3 pounds? Ronin of HackFromACave explains.

HotHardware report from IDF about McAfee Social Protection. During the security-centric portion of the keynote, however, Renee brought out a rep from Intel’s McAfee division to show off a beta release of the McAfee Social Protection app, which they called a "condom for your digital life"...

XbitLabs meanwhile have more info on Intel's Haswell Architecture. Intel Corporation's chief product officer described how its low-power processors, starting with the company's 4th generation Intel Core processor family available next year, will set a new standard for mobile computing experiences and innovative Ultrabook, convertible and tablet designs.

ExtremeTech spotted a very nerdy card game which I like the sound of. The successful product of a Kickstarter campaign from last year, CPU Wars is almost exactly what it sounds like. Each card depicts a different desktop processor, from the Intel 8080 to the AMD Phenom II, along with a list of eight key specs (Max Clock Speed, Max Bus Speed, Introduction Year, Transistor Count, Data Width, Manufacturing Process, Die Size, and Max TDP), so after you and one or two friends divvy up the deck, you compete to see who has the most powerful components. I remember playing a sports-car version of this back at school.

I have no idea why this is so amusing, but it'll do for today's timewaster. :)
