The Data Retention battle continues, with the Police wishing data could be data retained forever, with more info here. Australian Federal Police (AFP) commissioner Tony Negus has said that the proposal to retain telecommunications customer data for up to two years was a compromise made with the Attorney-General's Department, and that the law-enforcement agency would ideally like data to be held indefinitely. A $210,000 fine was levied last year, since the facility was well below its power-use target, which prompted Microsoft to deliberately burn $70,000 worth of electricity in three days "in a commercially unproductive manner" to avoid it, according to its own documents.
