Our thoughts are with those suffering the effects of Hurricane Sandy. The reports coming in from New York City are pretty grim at the moment. Updates are being posted in this thread.
Google cancelled their Android event as the storm approached, but still announced new tablets and phones and a new Android 4.2, "Jelly Bean". Android 4.2 isn't a complete overhaul of the software, but adds such features as a new keyboard, wireless video streaming services, a 360-degree photo feature, and a new Google Now service. Lots of discussion in our Google Android Forum.
Mawson sent in this Myst book project. Inside the book is a full desktop computer, completely self-contained without any external wires or hardware. In the above photo, the embedded screen isn't just showing a still photo or a video: it's running a full copy of realMyst PC edition. Onboard is a copy of all the Myst games. It's fast enough it plays all of them smoothly (even End of Ages at ~30fps). You play the games by touching the touch-screen.
Everything changes in V8 Supercars next year, and Nissan have unveiled their entry, an Altima with a V8 engine from a Patrol. When the final homologation process is complete the team will begin testing the first Nissan Altima V8 Supercar along with the construction of the three other cars. Four Nissan Altima V8 Supercars will make their race debut at the Clipsal 500 in Adelaide, South Australia on March 2 2013.
Also in motoring, but I'm not sure if it's nationwide or just NSW, you'll need a phone-holder gadget instead of your hand or lap while driving now. Authorities warn there will be no grace period for drivers who flout the rules that come into effect from Thursday. The only way motorists will be able to use their phone to make or receive calls is if it's sitting in a cradle mounted on the dash.
IBM have made a breakthrough towards carbon nanotube CPUs. The I.B.M. scientists at the T.J. Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, N.Y., have been able to pattern an array of carbon nanotubes on the surface of a silicon wafer and use them to build hybrid chips with more than 10,000 working transistors.
Meanwhile AMD have plans for new 64-bit ARM processors for servers. AMD’s first ARM technology-based processor will be a highly-integrated, 64-bit multicore System-on-a-Chip (SoC) optimized for the dense, energy-efficient servers that now dominate the largest data centers and power the modern computing experience. The first ARM technology-based AMD Opteron™ processor is targeted for production in 2014 and will integrate the AMD SeaMicro Freedom™ supercompute fabric, the industry’s premier high-performance fabric.
