Apple and HTC have reached a global settlement for the next ten years. This is a monumental development for not just the two companies themselves, but for the legal universe surrounding technology and gadgets on the whole. As for HTC and Apple, they’ve made it clear that this agreements means they’ll be able to focus on product innovation for a long time to come.

However, Apple's unsatisfactory apologies have left them footing the bill for Samsung's legal expenses in the UK. The Court of Appeal of England and Wales has ordered Apple to pay the legal fees of competitor Samsung on an 'indemnity basis' after the company published a "false and misleading" notice in the wake of a patent lawsuit over the iPad. The judgement, intended to humiliate Apple, will require the company to pay for all expenses associated with Samsung's legal defense, with any disputes over the exact amount likely to be resolved in the latter firm's favor.

The script writer for the upcoming Disney Star Wars film has been announced. Lucasfilm announced in a blog post that Michael Arndt, who also wrote the script for the upcoming second installment of the Hunger Games series, would be penning the initial drafts for Star Wars: Episode VII. Producers Kathleen Kennedy and George Lucas have begun discussions with Arndt to develop ideas and concepts for the new storyline.

Fnkychkn shared his concerns about Skype's privacy in the wake of recent allegations that they shared customer data with a private company. Skype has issued a statement on the matter, saying that it “takes its customers' privacy very seriously” and is undertaking an internal investigation. A spokesperson told me that Skype was working with the private security firm to “combat spam and malware,” and admitted that “it appears that some information may have been inappropriately passed on to Dutch authorities without our knowledge.” There's some background info from a few months ago here, here, here and here.

The International Space Station has demonstrated a (form of) space internet to control a rover on Earth. The system uses a network of nodes - connection points - to cope with delays. If there is a disruption, the data gets stored at one of the nodes until the communication is available again to send it further. This "store and forward" mechanism ensures data is not lost and gradually works its way towards its destination.

Air New Zealand have a clever hobbit-themed safety video. A four-minute-long Air New Zealand safety video celebrating the upcoming premiere of the first film in the Hobbit trilogy has gone viral within 24 hours of being posted on YouTube.
