Apple will be bringing production back to the USA next year, with more info here. Apple CEO Tim Cook has said that the company will invest $100 million to bring production of its Mac computers back to the US, by way of partnerships with local suppliers, he revealed in an interview with Bloomberg Businessweek. HP were quick to note that they already make PCs there. There's a relevant article about manufacturing in China here on TheAtlantic.

Facebook are asking their users to vote on a privacy overhaul by tomorrow. The social media giant, which has drawn fresh fire from privacy activists for the proposed changes on how it manages users' data, said the poll will be binding only if it gets responses from 30 per cent of members - or 300 million people. More info here.

The John McAfee saga continues - he's been captured, went to hospital, and is now discharged again, but still in custody. There's a statement from him in this video which also gives an insight into his current situation. On the ride over to the press meeting, John stated on the record that Sam Vanegas, his girlfriend, was with him in her bedroom on John's property on the night of the murder of his neighbor and fellow US citizen Greg Faull. He also said that several other witnesses could corroborate his whereabouts that evening.

Schnappy spotted this interesting video about how blind people use smartphones. Actually that guy has a lot of interesting/funny videos.

Speaking of which, the ACCC has a new smartphone app to help organise your receipts and tell you your rights. The facility is included in a mobile shopper application released today by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC). ACCC deputy chair Delia Rickard says the free ACCCShopper app provides answers to frequently asked consumer questions on refunds, returns, warranties and lay-by.

Also, if you can't be at the New Years Even fireworks display in Sydney, you can follow along with your phone. Clover Moore showed off a new app at Thursday's announcement of the 2012 NYE shenanigans, promising it would "light up phone screens as coloured lights splash the Sydney Harbour Bridge". Punters who download the app can hold their phones up by the harbour side to help be part of the interactive light show, while those less inclined to head along in person can feel some of the effect without leaving their lounge room.

Gabe Newell from Valve is talking about a console-like PC from them soon. I'm sure we've heard this kind of thing before from Valve, but now with their "Big Picture" feature it seems more realistic. Newell tells Kotaku that "our hardware will be a very controlled environment," and that some people will want a "turnkey" solution for their living room. "The nice thing about a PC is a lot of different people can try out different solutions," he said. "Customers can find the ones that work best for them."

NASA have announced a few more Mars missions - including another rover. "The Obama administration is committed to a robust Mars exploration program," NASA Administrator Charles Bolden said. "With this next mission, we're ensuring America remains the world leader in the exploration of the Red Planet, while taking another significant step toward sending humans there in the 2030s."
