Pre-Apocalypse Midday (2 Comments) (link)
 Friday, 21-December-2012  12:32:40 (GMT +10) - by Agg

Worst apocalypse ever. Actually, there's still about 10 hours to go.

Game publishers THQ have filed for bankruptcy protection. To date, THQ is the biggest victim of the transition from traditional games to the new world of online, social, and mobile games. THQ once had $800 million in revenues, but it made some bad bets on such titles as the uDraw art tablets, which couldn’t compete with cheaper iPhone and iPad tablet titles.

If you've got a Plextor M5 Pro SSD, I've got some good news for you. Plextor, a leading developer and manufacturer of high-performance digital media and storage equipment, announces the release of the new 100K Xtreme firmware update for the M5 Pro Solid State Drive. This update turns an M5 Pro into an M5 Pro Xtreme which delivers a new level of performance. More info here on StorageReview.

Or if you don't have an SSD yet but want one, ArsTechnica are the ones with good news about pricing. Computerworld has a report examining the current pricing trends, noting that in spite of the short period of flatness in 2011, SSD prices are down more than 66 percent over the past three years. Computerworld notes that consumer SSDs were typically coming in at about $3 per gigabyte in 2010, whereas today it is common to find SSDs clocking in at under $1 per gigabyte. That price point, $1 per gig, seems to be the magical tipping point for most folks—at or below that mark, SSDs begin to look like much more reasonable purchases.

Tech Report checked out AMD's new mobile Radeon. AMD has a new series of mobile graphics processors coming in early 2013. We've taken an early look at one of the newcomers, which looks to be substantially quicker than its predecessor.

HWSecrets stay retro with a look inside the Macintosh 512K. Meanwhile PC Perspective have a guide to building a Hackintosh. Since the Apple transition to Intel processors and mostly off-the-shelf PC hardware in 2006, people have been attempting to run OS X on home built computers originally destined for Windows. While running a different operating system on similar hardware may seem like a trivial thing, my historical experience with building a so called “Hackintosh” has been arduous at times.

Neerav looks back at Australia's telecomms industry, in the wake of rumours that Aus Post may resell Telstra services next year. This is interesting because back in the day Australia Post and Telstra were part of the same organisation – the Postmaster General’s Department (PMG). With this in mind let’s look back and see how Australia’s telecommunications industry has evolved over time.

Callan spotted this cool decoy-making spider. From afar, it appears to be a medium sized spider about an inch across, possibly dead and dried out, hanging in the center of a spider web along the side of the trail. Nothing too out of the ordinary for the Amazon. As you approach, the spider starts to wobble quickly forward and back, letting you know this spider is, in fact, alive. Step in even closer and things start to get weird- that spider form you were looking at is actually made up of tiny bits of leaf, debris, and dead insects.
