Callan sent word that the computing pioneer Doug Engelbart, perhaps most well-known for inventing the computer mouse, has passed away. Engelbart, who was born in Portland, Ore., was 88. It is hard to describe Engelbart’s role in the personal-computing revolution in mere words — he was well known for his work on human-computer interaction, including the invention of the computer mouse. His research and efforts led to the development of a diverse set of technologies such as hypertext, networked computers and the graphical user interface.

The hosts of the science-based children's show have acquired the full rights to the series' 5000 segments and will soon be broadcasting on their own YouTube channel. Dr Rob Morrison and Dr Deane Hutton have long wanted to revive the much-loved show - which ran from 1972 until 1990 - after a concerted social media campaign by fans. Discussion here.

Also making me reminisce is word that Altavista is being shut down by parent company Yahoo. Yahoo has announced that it will be shutting down one of the world's first search engines, Alta Vista on the 8th of July. Millions of people were introduced to web search via Alta Vista which launched in 1995. It wowed consumers and the industry by indexing more web pages - around 20 million - than was thought to exist at the time.
