Enigma codebreaker and father of the modern computer Alan Turing will finally get his official pardon in October - only 59 years after his death. The announcement marks a change of heart by the government, which declined last year to grant pardons to the 49,000 gay men, now dead, who were convicted under the 1885 Criminal Law Amendment Act. They include Oscar Wilde.
Samsung have stolen Apple's crown, becoming the most profitable electronics company, thanks d00dz. The vendor posted unaudited earnings earlier this month and estimated that its quarterly profit climbed to a record $8.3 billion. Apple reported its June-quarter earnings on Tuesday and revealed that quarterly profit came in at $6.9 billion, 17% less than Samsung managed during the quarter. An earlier report estimated that Samsung’s second-quarter smartphone shipments totaled a record 71 million units, crushing Apple’s June-quarter iPhone sales, which totaled 31 million units. Update: Oh no they haven't! The article's been updated, thanks X-ZemPt.
Anandtech have checked out a new Ultra HD monitor from ASUS. When it comes to 4K on the desktop, my main question is: how much difference will I see? ASUS is one of the first with a HiDPI display in the PQ321Q. While not truly 4K, it is a 3840x2160 LCD display that can accept an Ultra High Definition (UHD) signal over HDMI and DisplayPort. It also clocks in at a wallet-stretching $3,500 right now.
DM meanwhile pointed out a new Ultra HD monitor from Dell soon. The UltraSharp 32 is a 32-inch Ultra HD unit that wields a 3,840 x 2,160 IGZO panel sorting 1.07 billion colors. Discussion here.

NASA's Astronomy Picture of the Day today is an interesting composite video. Each panel shows one day. With 360 movie panels, the sky over (almost) an entire year is shown in time lapse format as recorded by a video camera on the roof of the Exploratorium museum in San Francisco, California. The camera recorded an image every 10 seconds from before sunrise to after sunset and from mid-2009 to mid-2010.
Sticking with spacey things, here's a trailer for Star Wars Downunder! Star Wars Downunder is a 30 minute Star Wars fan film which finally answers the age old question, that has confounded many a film buff before: What would happen if you crossed Star Wars with an Australian beer commercial. Discussion here.
