iiNet are buying Adam Internet. ISP iiNet will buy Adam Internet for $60 million, less than a fortnight after a proposed acquisition of Adam by Telstra fell through. iiNet said in a financial filing (pdf) that its plan to buy Adam Internet had already cleared regulatory approval by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC). Meanwhile, OCAU sponsor Internode are doubling Adelaide's free WiFi. For residents, commuters and visitors to Adelaide, Internode's success will greatly improve the speed and reach of free wireless coverage throughout the Central Business District (CBD) - with as much as 97 per cent coverage - giving faster Internet access than is currently available over mobile phone networks.

Samsung have a new 3D vertical NAND technology. As 9to5Google notes, this breakthrough could pave the way for single smartphone chips that have up to 384GB of storage since Samsung is essentially stacking “up to 24 layers of 16GB storage on top of each other in a chip not much thicker than existing ones.”

Kie sends word that the Mana Bar in Melbourne is closing in September. Mana Bar Melbourne is set to shut its doors in September after reportedly poor turnout numbers put the business under strain, as well as other reasons that management aren’t ready to speak about just yet. Those pesky hackers are at it again! Is nothing sacred? Not even your $6000 toilet, thanks TonyR. "Attackers could cause the unit to unexpectedly open/close the lid, activate bidet or air-dry functions, causing discomfort or distress to user." That's why you should always change the password on your toilet.

Speed testing equipment may be installed inside households to monitor whether consumers are getting what they pay for when using the national broadband network. The consumer regulator is considering a plan to roll out a ‘‘formal monitoring arrangement’’ involving volunteer households, designed to crack down on misleading speed promises by internet service providers. CAPTCHA might be mildly annoying for most people, but for the vision impaired it's a real nightmare - I had no idea, thanks Asher. Audio CAPTCHA was supposed to solve the problem for blind or vision impaired people, but my experience with audio CAPTCHA has been almost as inaccessible as a normal visual CAPTCHA – I must have listened to the Skype audio CAPTCHA 20 times before I gave up and asked my sighted friend to set up my account. More here, here and here.

Today's timewaster gave me a huge attack of nostalgia - it's Donkey Kong just like the one I had as a kid, and many other classic Nintendo handhelds as well! For more retro fun, tekin recommends typing 1980 anywhere on any YouTube video.. like, uh, this one.
