Microsoft's CEO Steve Ballmer is retiring within 12 months. Microsoft Corp. today announced that Chief Executive Officer Steve Ballmer has decided to retire as CEO within the next 12 months, upon the completion of a process to choose his successor. In the meantime, Ballmer will continue as CEO and will lead Microsoft through the next steps of its transformation to a devices and services company that empowers people for the activities they value most. There's some suggestion that it's in response to the flop of Surface RT. Discussion here.

If you have a heart attack in Germany, you might find help from above. German non-profit group Definetz wants to make defibrillators readily available across its country so that any time someone has a heart attack, the life saving devices are within arms reach. And it's looking to drones to help it bring its vision to fruition. On Friday, the group announced the Defikopter, a concept device it designed with drone-maker Height Tech to fly defibrillators to emergency responders or the public by way of a GPS-enabled smartphone app.

IntelInside sent in this worrying article about phone tracking. Australia's Westfield already use this technology to track smartphones at three shopping centres. ''Westfield is capable of using the MAC identifier system in its centres, but cannot collect any data other than to know smart phones are moving within,'' a company spokeswoman said. ... Its privacy policy states that it collects information ''where devices are able to connect to, or are identifiable by, in-centre infrastructure'' and that it uses ''this information so that we can tell … where shoppers spend most of their time''.

Meanwhile there's some software to detect faked photos. In the age of Photoshop, detecting manipulated photos is a growing priority for lawyers, journalists and people involved in law enforcement and national security. To determine an image’s authenticity, the software uses geometric formulas to detect and analyze shadows that are invisible to the naked eye, then lines them up with a potential light source.
