Microsoft are buying Nokia's phone business, with more info here. The move unites Windows Phone 8 with its biggest hardware supporter, giving the company the integrated mobile offering it's been looking for with Surface and other devices. When the deal closes in the first quarter of 2014, Microsoft will pay €3.79 billion for Nokia's business, plus another €1.65 billion for its portfolio of patents.

Red Bull have confirmed they will be replacing Mark Webber when he retires at the end of this season, with Daniel Ricciardo from Perth. AUSSIE F1 driver Mark Webber has been one of the first to congratulate countryman Daniel Ricciardo on being officially confirmed as his replacement at leading team Red Bull for 2014. The 24-year-old Toro Rosso driver won the race for the coveted drive ahead of former world champion Kimi Raikkonen, with talks between the Finn and Red Bull ending last month.

That's not all that's changing in F1 next year, with some high-tech engines and other systems being updated. The 2014 season will bring with it some of the biggest changes to Formula One racing’s technical regulations for quite some time. Not only is the sport adopting new 1.6-litre turbocharged V6 engines, there are also tweaks to the rules concerning aerodynamics and a far greater emphasis on energy recovery systems.

Meanwhile there's some clever plastics on the way, that become stronger when stressed. The carefully designed molecular structure of the material is what gives it this unusual property. Like all plastics, this one has a backbone composed mostly of carbon. However, the carbon atoms are arranged in a series of triangles extending down in long chains with two bromine atoms at one point. The researchers found that the unique structure of this compound could turn “destructive” energy into “constructive” energy.

Tech Report checked out a new caching system on Samsung SSDs. Along with its SLC-based TurboWrite cache, Samsung's 840 EVO SSD has a secondary caching layer that stores data in system memory. This so-called RAPID cache is coming to other Samsung SSDs, and we've taken a closer look at how it affects performance.
