There's an interesting piece on the future of the NBN with Malcolm Turnbull as Communications Minister, by Gizmodo. I’m seeing a lot of people wailing on Twitter, Reddit and Facebook this evening, saying that the National Broadband Network is “dead”. “Goodbye, NBN”, one of my friends wrote. Here’s why you should stop being so dramatic.

Speaking of the future, Elon Musk of Tesla cars fame among other things has announced his intentions of designing a hand-manipulated hologram design engine - head here for an interesting video on it all. Musk showed a wireframe of the rocket part, and he was able to rotate the 3D object on a screen with one hand, and with a second hand, he zoomed in and out, moved it around the screen, and spun the object around and “caught it”--all in the air.

Techspot have done a review roundup on their top ten CPU coolers, using the Ivy Bridge-E. The new chip is fully compatible with Sandy Bridge-E/EP's LGA2011 socket. We contacted all the major players and received 10 heatsinks to test including units from Noctua, Thermalright, Xigmatek, Silverstone and Thermaltake.

Hot Hardware also did a roundup, except they looked at external storage. All three of the units in our test bank employ the speedy USB 3.0 interface, which is a standard option for many drives, and of course they’re all backwards compatible with USB 2.0. They range from 750GB to 1TB in size and, as it happens, all three are compact and highly portable.

Techreport looked at Solid State Drives, and in particular the write endurance of each drive. Flash memory has limited write endurance. So do the SSDs based on it. How many writes can modern drives take before they expire, and what happens to them as the flash wears out? We're trying to find out by testing a selection of SSDs to failure.

A belated Happy Birthday to Google, which turned 15 last Wednesday. To celebrate, The Telegraph listed 15 Google facts you might not know. Originally known as BackRub, Google was founded by Larry Page and Sergey Brin in a friend's garage while they were Ph.D. students at Stanford University. It has since grown to become the world's biggest search engine, and the name Google has become synonymous with search.

An apparent leak on some new Apple tech has been released, showing a fingerprint scanner and a new color iPhone. On Thursday, Dickson leaked what he says are the first detailed pictures of the new model's new "home" button with its rumored biometric fingerprint scanner
