Nigel from PlusCorp sent over a document from AMD, detailing some changes to the packaging/accessories provided with their retail "boxed" CPU's:
1. Improved Heat sink - Smaller and Better
2. Improved Fan - Quieter More Efficient
3. Improved Retaining Clip - 6 Tab - More Reliable
4. Improved Identification - Bar-coded Chip with Chip Serial Number
Expect to see these improvements phased in over the next few months as we clear existing inventory levels. More info in this PDF (75KB), which I've mirrored on our server.
A smaller, lighter, more efficient cooler is certainly good news - although I don't recall being particularly troubled by the existing one. More interesting is that the retail cooler will now use all 6 socket lugs. That's great news, as anyone who's snapped the centre lug off a socket will agree.
Also, note that very soon, the only chips available from retail outlets will be boxed CPU's, according to another note from AMD. The only exception is the Duron 1.3GHz, which is still available as a "tray" or OEM, unpackaged CPU.
