Nightmare in New Zealand

Aaaaaargh! Most of the daily news stuff is mailed to me by other webmasters, so I was planning to log in with my palmpilot+mobile and read my mail from NZ, forwarding the stuff for the news page onto Jim. However, despite the fact that I am 15 minutes from the heart of Auckland, there is _ZERO_ digital mobile reception here. So now I'm logging on via the slowest web PC I've ever used, trying to find a Windows 3.1 telnet client so I can log into Zip's shell server and read my mail. This machine is a crappy old Toshiba laptop with a mono screen, that annoying "my hard drive spindle is about to seize" sound and a 14.4 modem, running Netscape 3 under Windows 3.1. I dunno if it's just the modem or if XTRA.NZ really are the slowest ISP in the universe, but downloading a 4mb file is estimated at taking 1hr:20 so I may give up soon. This is not helped by the machine hard-locking if I try to load any of the OcAust pages (but not this news script, thankfully).
I must have done something to really offend the Technology Gods and now they're punishing me. I know, it must've been that iMac laptop someone offered me really cheaply the other day.. I actually considered buying it. That'll be it. Serves me right.
