Dud Athlon 700's? (0 Comments) (link)
 Sunday, 14-May-2000  09:44:54 (GMT +10) - by Agg

There seem to be a few dud Athlon 700's floating around Sydney at the moment, maybe in other areas too. These aren't fake (from what I can tell) but seem to have broken L2 cache. Tarrasque tells me that in the computer shop he works at he's found around 4 duds so far, which all work fine (albeit a lot more slowly) when the L2 is disabled. I bought a dud 700 from a different shop yesterday (before I knew of this), and it would not even complete a scandisk before locking up or getting a runtime error. I took it back to the shop and exchanged it for a 750 and paid the difference, and so far so good. So if you're in the market for a 700 (which seems to be the best value Athlon at the moment) double-check it before you break that warranty sticker, preferably before you leave the shop with it.
