A few people have sent this link in, which explains how to upgrade your HP or Sony burner to a later (and faster burning) model with a BIOS flash. However, you might also want to read this link from Anthony, which has quite a few people having horrible things happen to their drives. A lot having free upgrades, a lot having dead drives. Your decision. :) Seems to be mostly (or perhaps only) the SCSI ones, too, I couldn't find any info on my HP8100i IDE burner listed.

Use of such will now get you in trouble... hmm, doesn't sound very easily-enforceable.. sounds more like that internet censorship thing that got buried because it was so impractical to implement.
