There's not much happening in the news box this morning, hopefully it picks up later in the day..
Hardware One have reviewed the SMC 8-port 10/100 Storage Server. Kind of like an 8-port switch, a firewall, and a 20g hard drive all mixed together..
Well, its not the GeForce3, but to alot of people its going to be alot more usefull.. Toshiba has been the first to develop a true Random Number Generator. And what good will one of these do ya? Well.. it makes encryption a hell of alot harder to crack, and for alot of things that are required to act in a random manner, it'll make them work alot better to. I don't expect it to be too long until we see versions of this hardware built right into motherbaords or cpus.. as long as Toshiba don't do a RAMBUS and patent everything including the word random.. thanks for the headsup Márcio.
They've upgraded to a Thunderbird over at FiringSquad.. and told us about the experience.
TheTechZone is giving away a 256Mb stick of CL2 Micron RAM that they've tested up to 150MHz. It's one of those post-in-my-forum-to-go-in-the-draw comps.. I'm not much of a fan of those, but maybe you want the RAM more than me :)
Over on Digit-Life they've posted a review looking at every recent chipset for the x86 Platform. It's a pretty well written article explaining what each chipset was designed for, how they perform relativley to their competitors. Alot of people may not realise it, but the competition in the mainboard market is as healthy as it's ever been, with 4 competitive chipset makers, and at least 2 (in the case of Socket-A, 4) competing chipset designs.
SecretSquirrel just pasted this into IRC.. its an article about Telstra's Internet Support Service (thats an oxymoron) performance.. or severe lack of. I'm sure alot of people won't be suprised to hear that's true, but to me it's just utterly pathetic.
They've taken a look at the GlobalWin WBK38, ThermalTake Volcano II and Vantec FCE-62540D Heatsinks over on AwareMag to see how they perform. Three very boring looking fast-fans-on-big-blocks-of-aluminium designs. They all seem to work pretty well tho..
VideoCardDrivers have got the latest 307 version BIOS for the IWill KK-266-R.. apparently the old one didn't work with VCM sticks over 64Mb.. which probably affects no one. The new BIOS adds more memory tweaks tho, which is always good. Incidently, I cant see why VCM memory hasn't even slightly taken off.. it gives performance way above that of normal SD-RAM, with the only disadvantages being a slight price premium, and the fact that it'll only work with Via chipsets... 'spose you're all waiting for the DDR KT266 (like meeeeee)
