At 5pm Sydney time, Mir went swimming.
NASA were running this tracking page, which gave a minute-by-minute update as to where Mir was above the planet - at about 4:30pm Mir passed Australia for the last time, and by 5pm, the tracking stopped, to be replaced by the "A goodbye Salute to Mir" graphic seen on the NASA tracking page now.
15 years is a LONG time for a piece of gear built by man to be anywhere - let alone the harsh environment of space.
And despite alchemy's concerns, the Russians even managed to park it where they said they would. :)
