Jamie sent in this page listing five download disasters from SiteAdvisor, which serves as a warning about free programs full of extra ad/spyware. I actually had to de-spyware my own PC after a mate installed some dodgy software on it recently, and I spent much of last Sunday disinfecting one of my neighbour's PC's. Ad-Aware and SpyBot are two programs I recommend you use in parallel, but I also found HijackThis and the sister program "StartupList" good for killing off the really stubborn stuff.
Speaking of useful software, I generally recommend AVG Antivirus as a good free solution.. PyroCPU report that they now have a version for Linux available.
Bit-Tech have some info on upcoming expansion packs for Battlefield 2. As is suggested by its name, Armoured Fury will focus on large, mechanised battles which hark back to the El Alamein-style maps in Battlefield 1942. Cool, we were just remarking in IRC last night that what BF2 really lacks is the huge desert tank-battle maps from BF1942 and Desert Combat. Shame it costs extra, tho.
I think I've mentioned this before, but it's pretty cool.. Pandora.com is like your own personal DJ - good for finding new music etc, thanks rulke.
HWZone have their Top 100 Products of 2005 listed.. and surprisingly, this article isn't just a big PriceGrabber linkfest.
Seagate has some large notebook HDD's on the way, using perpendicular recording. What's not so standard however is that the Momentus series will be introduced with a flagship unit sporting a capacity of 160GB -- the largest capacity for notebook computers ever.
VIAArena report on some bug-inspired robots. The biologically inspired robotics lab at Case looks at how animals function in real life and tries to emulate their behavior and physical systems in robots.
LegitReviews chatted to a co-founder of Corsair Memory. Let's talk about the future of computer memory in 2006. It looks like we are going to see DDR3 and FB-DIMM's enter into the market space this year. Which should enthusiasts be more interested in?
Think algae is pretty boring? HAVIC noticed some green slime that we might be seeing a lot more of in future. Bolted onto the exhaust stacks of a brick-and-glass 20-megawatt power plant behind MIT's campus are rows of fat, clear tubes, each with green algae soup simmering inside.
TheTechZone have picks and pans from CES 2006, while Futurelooks focus on Philips and OCZ's Cryo-Z. ASUS, Dell and Pioneer are covered on XYZ, and they have mixed feelings about two big product launches at CES. Finally, Anandtech report on Motherboards, Memory, Cooling and a few surprises from CES.
KatatonicKwan sent in this link about HDCP: In short, even if you have bought one of the rare HDCP monitors on the market (the probability is low except if it includes an HD Ready sticker) it wouldnīt be capable of displaying protected HD videos because your current graphic card isnīt compatible.
MAXKNOTT spotted this cool video of a very easy to park car.. click the "download server" button to get the file.
It was kinda weird to discover FeedAgg.com during my wanderings. Not sure what I expected to be there. :) Speaking of which, must be lunchtime..
