Saturday Afternoon Gargantu-Post (0 Comments) (link)

Ben sends word that NVIDIA are changing GF4 MX420 to use DDR SDRAM instead of SDR. This is mostly because the MX420 is supposed to be the cheapo bottom-end value chip, but SDRAM prices are continuing to rise as production moves to DDR. DDR will be cheaper and probably also give a small speed boost to these cards.

Big news today seems to be reviews of the Shuttle AK35GTR Ver 2.2 socketA DDR motherboard. Why is it interesting? Because it uses the KT333CE chipset. Why is that interesting? I dunno, but after you've read the reviews by PC-Stats, OCWB and VR-Zone, I'm sure you'll be able to tell me.

Got spammed with another of those Microsoft Security Update emails today.. the executable attached to which is almost certainly some kind of horrible virus. I wish virus writers would all get girlfriends or find something else to do with their creative urges..

Dan's compared a couple of Thrustmaster controllers and, of course, couldn't resist tearing them into small peices.

HardcoreWare have an AMD vs Intel CPU battle going on.

d00bie and Wired want to tell us about things in space.. big secret things that spy on us and socking great huge things that will kill us all, 878 years from now.. maybe.

ThinkTechie have a guide to making a plexi reservoir for watercooling.

Want to get back into old-style gaming..? Too late, you shoulda bid more than $12,200 USD for this lot.. someone's garage just got a lot more crowded, thanks unix.

DesignTechnica wonder if consoles running linux are really consoles at all..

Mitch says this website is good for checking your POP3 email from pretty much anywhere.

Zia spotted this new 3d benchmark. Requirements: * DirectX 8.1 * PixelShader support in hardware (GeForce 3, GeForce 4 Ti, Radeon 8500) * A minimum of 512MB RAM running Windows XP, 2000 or ME is recommended. ooo, will have to check that one out.

Hogwash noticed that the Powerstrip videocard overclocking (among other things) software has been updated and that there are new Linux NVIDIA drivers.

I think we've seen this before, but Schrambo notes Intel free training about why they think AMD sucks, or something. They're still in court about MMX, too, thanks.. uhhm.. I deleted the email and forgot who it was from. Thanks anyway. :)

Heatseekerz have an LCD Soldering guide in their forums. Still incredibly popular, months after posting, is Wolfy's DIY Parallel-Cable LCD guide.

HotHardware have been doing some clockgen swapping on their Abit THII-RAID motherboard.

TheInq fear Microsoft's tendrils may soon extend well into graphics processor territory, thanks F1DarkFlash.

Elvis spotted another fan in the mouse mod, for the sweaty-palmed.

Callan says this is an interesting (if self-aggrandizing) article on reverse-engineering the protocols used on electronic management systems in cars.

Zero_g71 found this petition about ethical use of distributed computing project time and data. BTW, our resident Master of Folding, Bollocks, seems to be updating the OCAU Folding page pretty much daily now with news and info about our World Number One, damnit, World Number Two folding team.

Time-sucking Silliness:
SFCave worm game (we've seen it before) from OzzyFudd.
Clicking championships game (gets boring rapidly) from zzapped.
