Right, time for a little news-catchup.
Firstly, a few links about a worrying Security Systems Standards and Certification Act in the USA. Part of this proposed law makes it unlawful to manufacture, import, offer to the public, provide or otherwise traffic in any interactive digital device that does not include and utilize certified security technologies that adhere to the security system standards. Talk about big brother. :( More info here, here and here, thanks Peter. Fortunately, it seems like it will be rejected in its current form.
Digit-Life have compared pentium4 chipsets.. you will see how well Intel 850, Intel 845, Intel 845 B-Step (Intel 845D), VIA P4X266, VIA P4X266A, SiS 645 A1 and A2 revisions, and ALi Aladdin-P4 can perform with Intel Pentium 4 2.2GHz (on 0.13micron Northwood core).
DeviantPC have a beginners guide to benchmarking PC’s.
SushiMOO spotted a cumulative security patch for Microsoft's IIS webserver product, good to see more of their new security focus from them.
Sciby found an article about Sports Illustrated using pro digital cameras for their magazine with good effect. No swimsuit shots, sadly. :)
VIAArena have an interesting article about DDR333 memory tweaking, where they explain what a lot of the mysterious BIOS settings mean. Should answer a few questions I’ve seen in the forums lately.
Win y’self a fancy-looking radiator for watercooling over on HWLabs, makers of the Black Ice we reviewed here a while ago.
Amiga games for Windows should be available soon according to the Reg.
Japanese mad lad Holicho has his P4 2.4 @ 4.11GHz.. you might be tempted to suspect a WCPUID screenshot in isolation as a speed cheat but over on his homepage there’s a lot more info.. he and another guy called Bunny have been doing this crazy liquid-nitrogen stuff for years now so I tend to believe their results no matter how insane.
Very interesting news: they’ve found huge stores of hydrogen in the earth’s crust. Could this herald a new era of clean power? Still, I dunno if ripping up huge chunks of the earth’s crust is such a good idea either.
If you can hack this Korean webserver they’ll give you $100,000.. nice.
A long-standing OCAU mystery: this site keeps showing up in our referer logs but has no links to us. It’s been cropping up from time to time, for probably a couple of years now. It’s a site for the japanese all-girl band Shonen Knife. I’ve heard some of their stuff and some of it’s pretty cool.. no idea how or why people keep going from there to here, tho. :) Maybe our man-in-Japan Chainbolt is a fan!
Plenty more news to come..
