A storm has damaged a major Australian internet link to the rest of the world. Southern Cross Cable operations vice president, Dean Veverka, has confirmed that hurricane-strength storms and flooding have wiped out the carrier's Oregon cable route and halved its bandwidth between Australian and the US. Southern Cross's customers in Australia include iiNet, Internode and AAPT. Haven't noticed any issues here, hooray for redundancy.
If you're a new Optus Fusion customer, be careful of excess usage as you could cop a hefty fee, thanks mpot. A cable user could reach $300 in excess fees in just 30 minutes once they had exceeded their 2GB quota. An Optus spokesperson claimed less than a week ago to ZDNet News that printed flyers explaining the new excess fees were erroneous.
DailyTech have some details on AMD's Tri-core Processors. AMD representatives, speaking on conditions of anonymity, confirmed the initial 2.4 GHz Phenom 8700 and 2.3 GHz Phenom 8600 tri-core processors will launch with a 95W thermal envelope.
Gibson have made a self-tuning guitar. For users who purchase the add-on technology, the guitar recognizes pitch. Then, its processor directs motors on its six tuning pegs to tighten or loosen the strings accordingly. I was actually wondering why this didn't already exist at a recent Slava Grigoryan concert, where before some songs he had to spend a few minutes tuning up his guitar. Another idea stolen from my brain, curses. Discussion here.
Microsoft are dropping the kill switch from Vista. However pirates won't be getting off the hook completely: "They won't lose access to functionality or features, but it will be very clear to them that their copy of Window Vista is not genuine and they need to take action." Anyway, apparently Vista's piracy rate is half that of XP, thanks mr_insideout.
From Justin: An interesting read on security in the future. Makes a few predictions and some obvious observations that were true 10 years ago, are true today and will be true in 10 years from now.
Dan has some thoughts about video cards. My latest Ask Dan is all about the perfectly straightforward and entirely non-confusing current video card market. Apparently some of my readers are, for reasons entirely unfathomable to me, having some difficulty figuring out what to buy.
