Hurricane Gustav looks like it will reach New Orleans in about 4 hours or so. Everyone is a lot better prepared than when Katrina, a similarly sized storm, hit 3 years ago with the loss of 1800 lives. Most people have evactuated New Orleans already, so here's hoping the devastation and loss of life will be significantly less this time. There's a thread here in Current Events keeping track of things, and people are watching 3 drunk guys on a webcam too.

There's been a record 9 entries into our Iron Musician competition for August. You can listen to the entries and vote for your favourite here.

HWZone report on IFA 2008 in Berlin, while MSI's European Overclocking Challenge is covered on OC3D. HWZone also have part 1 and part 2 of Comex 2008 coverage from Singapore.

In yet another case of a hard drive that should probably have been physically destroyed rather than sold, some UK taxpayer data was sold on eBay. According to the Daily Mail, the computer was sold on eBay to a Scottish computer expert for just £6.99 (US$14). The expert then used data recovery equipment to discover around 35,000 files, including council tax bills, photographs of council staff and internal memos.

NVIDIA apparently has confirmed their QPI license, meaning they can make motherboard chipsets for Intel's Bloomfield and other future CPUs. Discussion of these future CPUs here.

Andy sent in an article about virtual hotels in virtual worlds. I just finished writing this post about hotels in Second Life, World of Warcraft and other MMOs.

Guru3D have updated RivaTuner to v2.10. GeForce 9x00 support has been added as well as ForceWare GeForce drivers up-to 177.92 and AMD ATI Catalyst 8.8 support. With this release comes support for ATI Radeon 4800 class graphics adapaters and better GeForce GTX series 200 support as well.

Sniper noticed this 4-Terabyte solid-state drive tech being tested by IBM. Compared with the fastest industry benchmarked hard disk drive system, Quicksilver not only improved performance by 250 percent but did this in less than one-twentieth of the response time, one-fifth of the floor space, and with 55 percent of the power and cooling requirements, IBM said.

ZDNet have an interesting article about CAPTCHA-solving farms in India. No CAPTCHA can survive a human that’s receiving financial incentives for solving it, and with an army of low-waged human CAPTCHA solvers officially in the business of "data processing" while earning a mere $2 for solving a thousand CAPTCHA’s, I’m already starting to see evidence of consolidation between India’s major CAPTCHA solving companies.

I haven't watched it fully yet, but BFM sent in this Australian Story episode about an Australian geek having a hard time in the real world. Daniel Meadows lives his life on the internet. Through his video diaries on YouTube, the shy young recluse has found friendship and fame. When love beckoned in the real world, Daniel Meadows left the security of his parent's home to follow his heart across the globe. But his American dream became a border security nightmare, sparking a frenzy of outraged vlogging and blogging around the world.
