Microsoft are offering their Hyper-V virtualisation software for free, thanks Sniper. The software comprises Hyper-V itself, plus a cut-down Server Core installation of Microsoft's Windows Server 2008, and as such is a stand-alone version of the virtualisation solution.

TechReport look at some revised Xeons from Intel. Although much of the focus in recent weeks has been on upcoming chips based on the next-generation Nehalem microarchitecture, Intel isn't yet finished advancing its 45nm processors, as witnessed by today's introduction of a new revision of its dual-socket Xeon server/workstation-class CPUs. This new E-stepping silicon brings a bit of a clock frequency increase and some minor reductions in power draw to the Harpertown Xeons.

Guru3D have an interview with Adrian Silasi from SiSoft. We believe the industry is seeing a shift from the model where heavy computational workload is processed on a traditional CPU to a model that uses the (GP)GPU. While in the past the GPU was only used for games and graphics, programmable shaders have changed this perception. With the release of GPGPU programming languages it is now possible to compile most algorithms to run on a (GP)GPU without the developer knowing anything about programmable shaders. You can grab the latest Sandra from our mirror of course.

TrustedReviews have an editorial about TV and the internet. The BBC's iPlayer shows just how good the Internet can be for delivering TV content, but it's only available in the UK. Unfortunately TV companies are intent on limiting their content to domestic viewers, rather than global ones.

ModMyMachine have another tutorial video posted. This time it's Mounting a water cooling block on a HD4870 X2 graphic card.

Tweaktown compared motherboard energy-saving features, namely ASUS EPU 6, MSI DrMOS and GIGABYTE DES Advanced. Over the last six months the idea of going green with each motherboard manufacturer has picked up. Ideas and thoughts of a cleaner and greener PC industry are now taking hold. GIGABYTE can be thanked for kicking this off. Not only have they been the first to introduce solid state components across the entire line of boards, but also the first to introduce a hardware based voltage switching system that allows the board to physically shut down un-used phases when the CPU is at idle and during lower states of activity; very impressive.
