I had no idea this was going on, but Chris sent word of a successful private space flight by a company called SpaceX. Their Falcon 1 launch vehicle has achieved orbit on September 28, becoming the first privately developed liquid fuel rocket to orbit the Earth. There's a YouTube video of the launch here.

Your name could be orbiting the Earth soon too, on NASA's Glory satellite. Participants will receive a printable certificate from NASA and have their name recorded on a microchip that will become part of the spacecraft. The deadline for submitting names is Nov. 1, 2008.

HWZone compared two AMD 790GX boards from Foxconn and MSI. AMD's new 790GX chipset comes paired with a new Southbridge and a feature that's touted to improve the overclocking on Phenom processors. Meanwhile InsideHW compared ATi Radeon HD 4670 vs. nVIDIA GeForce 9500GT in the budget arena. From launching of GeForce 8600GTS and 8600GT and their price drop, nVIDIA did very little for this category of users.

ArsTechnica reckon Windows 7 will go public in late October. Attendees at Microsoft's Professional Developer Conference next month are in for a treat: everyone going will get a 160GB hard disk with a copy of all the software on show, including Windows 7.

A Judge has ordered a new trial for an American woman convicted of pirating music on the internet, overturning the previous awarding of US$222,000 in damages to record companies. "Her status as a consumer who was not seeking to harm her competitors or make a profit does not excuse her behaviour. But it does make the award of hundreds of thousands of dollars in damages unprecedented and oppressive."
