Two Linux developers from Intel's Open Source Technology Center have demonstrated an Asus Eee PC which can boot Linux in five seconds. They had to hold up the EEE PC for the audience, since the time required to finish booting was less than the time needed for the projector to sync. … The fast-booting system does not use GDM but boots straight to a user session, running the XFCE desktop environment. Discussion in this thread. Thanks Mad Mike.

Microsoft has denied that their Web site for the DevSta coding competition was defaced by hackers, stating that some entries were simply "non-genuine submissions." Given the trite nature of the vandalism it's easy to believe what Microsoft's say. The pictures I included show what amount to nothing more than rubbish postings in a user-submitted area of the site, specifically, the contest submissions. Thanks Badooleoo.

Badooleoo also sent in this link with a site warning that pushing the DIMM voltage higher than 1.65V might be damaging to Nehalem CPUs. Of course, this is still beyond the standard JEDEC DDR3 voltage spec of 1.5V, but it's also a long way off the voltage required by overclockers' enthusiast memory, such as Corsair's Dominator TW3X2G2133C9DF, which needs 2V to run at its specified 2,133MHz maximum speed with timings of 9-9-9-24.

A new exploit affecting all the major desktop browsers has prompted Adobe to release a workaround for their Flash Player until they can fix the "Clickjacking" threat in a future version. In a nutshell, it's when you visit a malicious website and the attacker is able to take control of the links that your browser visits. … With this exploit, once you're on the malicious web page, the bad guy can make you click on any link, any button, or anything on the page without you even seeing it happening. Thanks Callan.

Edj noticed that the Victoria Police Traffic and Transit Safety Department are using Google Maps to visually pinpoint the "location of road fatalities across the state this year." Leading Senior Constable Ian Whalley of the Road Safety Unit said the map gives community members a visual of the number of tragedies on our roads. "The map not only shows the number of deaths on Victorian roads, it displays exactly where they are occurring, giving the community a clear view of fatality hot spots," he said.

Ars Technica looks at the increase of commercial-grade hardware being passed off as military-grade electronic components, some of which have ended up in mission-critical systems. Under the new rules, government contractors were explicitly discouraged from designing systems that required the use of expensive, proprietary electronics or processors that would never be widely produced.
