Slipkord sent word that Richard "Lord British" Garriott of Ultima fame is currently orbiting the earth as a space tourist. Richard Garriott has made history in becoming the first 2nd-generation space traveller, due to his dad Owen Garriott being a former astronaut in the 1970s. Meanwhile Esther Dyson, who has been involved in many web startups etc, is training as a backup astronaut for a similar flight.

An Australian radio presenter has missed the hourly news bulletin because she was busy using Facebook. Management at 3AW promptly sent a memo to all staff instructing them to stay off Facebook unless they were using it for research.

Microsoft has a new programming language called 'M'. More info here. The company is today due to announce M, for building textual domain-specific languages (DSLs) and software models with XAML. Microsoft will also announce Quadrant, for building and viewing models visually, and a repository for storing and combining models using a SQL Server database.

WSJ have an interesting article in defence of piracy. How is it that sensible people, people no doubt educated at some of the best universities and law schools in the country, would come to think it a sane use of corporate resources to threaten the mother of a dancing 13-month-old?

Deepspring sent in this review of Open Office 3.0. Open Office is a free and open source alternative to MS Office Suit. It features OO Base (Data management), OO Calc (Spreadsheet), OO Draw (Graphics), OO Impress (Presentations), OO Math (Equation and Formula), and OOWriter (Word Processing).

HyRax1 noted Wikipedia switching all servers to Ubuntu. According to Brion Vibber, CTO of the San Francisco-based Wikimedia Foundation, Wikipedia made the move because the "mix of things, some Red Hat 9, some Fedora, several different versions," made it harder and harder for Wikipedia's tiny five-person IT staff to maintain Wikipedia's approximately 400 servers.
