This entire news post is from Matt. Thanks, Matt!

Are the days of RAID 5 numbered? RAID 5 protects against a single disk failure. You can recover all your data if a single disk breaks. The problem: once a disk breaks, there is another increasingly common failure lurking. And in 2009 it is highly certain it will find you. Update: Lemming pointed out Dan Rutter's response to this article.

Gears of War 2 will not be released in either Germany or Japan. Seeing as the first one wasn't released in Germany, that's no surprise. But Japan? Why isn't it being released in Japan? The first one was, despite its "Z" (adults only) rating, and it did pretty well for a Western game, selling over 30k units. Heck, Microsoft even held a Z-rated party last year celebrating the fact they release adults-only games. So what gives?

Youtube recently added an audio preview feature to their comments page. It seems someone at YouTUBE took this comic seriously and decided to add an "Audio Preview" feature. Now you can hear your comments read aloud to you.

DailyTech get the inside word on Opera 9.6. Discussion turned to the recently released 9.6 browser. Overall, Mr. Tetzchner says the real difference between his company's browsers and competitors Chrome, Internet Explorer, and Firefox, is that Opera is lighter, faster, and offers more useful built in functionality without having to tack on confusing upgrades.

DamnInteresting have a new article on the worst nuclear contamination site in Russia. In late 1945, along the banks of the Techa River in the Soviet Union, a dozen labor camps sent 70,000 inmates to begin construction of a secret city. Mere months earlier the United States' Little Boy and Fat Man bombs had flattened Hiroshima and Nagasaki, leaving Soviet leaders salivating over the massive power of the atom. In a rush to close the gap in weapons technology, the USSR commissioned a sprawling plutonium-production complex in the southern Ural mountains. The clandestine military-industrial community was to be operated by Russia's Mayak Chemical Combine, and it would come to be known as Chelyabinsk-40.

For all those wanting to kill some time, here's an interesting game. Lead the British or German army through the trenches of Europe in this First World War strategy game. Use infantry, armor and fire support to take control of the ground or bombard your foes into submission. Or, try this tactical assassin sniper game.
