Major Australian cities are set to get an electric vehicle recharging network. The agreement with have the finance group raising the money to build the charge network and placing the network in the country's largest cities like Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane. Each of the three cities would have a network of between 200,000 and 250,000 charging stations by 2012.

A new version of the popular Linux OS Ubuntu, Intrepid Ibex, is about to be released. Ubuntu is a community developed, Linux-based operating system that is perfect for laptops, desktops and servers. It contains all the applications you need - a web browser, presentation, document and spreadsheet software, instant messaging and much more. Discussion here.

While on the subject of Ubuntu, Firefox creators Mozilla have removed the EULA from their Ubuntu version. Mozilla received a lot of criticism from OS community for bundling EULA with Firefox builds. Even though they decided to remove EULA, earlier Ubuntu Ibex alpha builds still had the old EULA on. The last update has removed this much talked about EULA and in to something perhaps more acceptable to the OS community.

If you're free on the 15th of November, and live in either Sydney or Brisbane there's a synchronous pub crawl planned. Behold, my brethren of the interconnected tubulars. This is a summons to congregate under the fluorescent lighting of an alcohol-serving venue (or several), and partake in the consumption of lager and other beverages of fortune.

Computer giant Apple have hired a Yale dean to head their educational inititive Apple University. The Cupertino, Calif., computer maker said Joel Podolny, the dean of the Yale School of Management, will join Apple as vice president and dean of Apple University. The company declined to provide details about the university or the position.

Hotels in the US are starting to use iPhones to communicate with guests. Guests at the Malibu Beach Inn and the Sky Hotel, both in California, can order food, drinks, wake-up calls, spa treatments, concierge services and transportation, all from a special application on their iPhone or iPod Touch. If they don't have either of the devices at check-in, guests are provided with a 16GB iPod Touch that has the "Hotel Evolution" application already loaded.

The U.N. is using the popularity of mobile phones in South Africa to combat the AIDS epidemic. Project Masiluleke will send one million free text messages a day to push people to be tested and treated. Trials of the system showed that calls to counsellors at the National Aids helpline in Johannesburg increased by 200% when messages were broadcast.
