Apparently laptops given to NSW students will only be able to browse a white-list of websites. "Our internet filtering is unbreakable. We have a huge proxy array that does all the filtering. We've just brought that in-house and the reason we have done that is we want much tighter control over it," said Wilson. Hear that, kids? Unbreakable. Golly.

Dopefish spotted an interesting article about Hubble's antiquated computers. NASA scientists trying to find out what went wrong during last week's repair of the Hubble Space Telescope find themselves dealing with 486 processors and other outdated computer technology. But sometimes, mission managers say, simple is good when you're out in space—as long as you know how to talk to decades-old computers.

The System Administrator's Guild of Australia are the latest to add their voice to the chorus of "internet filtering isn't going to work, guys" directed at the Government. She stressed that SAGE-AU's position on the issue of Internet filtering was "based purely on the technical feasibility of an Internet filtering solution," and not on the questions of censorship. Some more stories about the censorship plans here and here, and of course there's a huge thread here.

Here's a cool video about an interactive mirror. The interactive mirror features proximity sensors, gesturing, and both nearfield and farfield infrared. Also, check out this hard drive clock project.

Digit-Life took a look at NVIDIA's CUDA technology. In the first article dedicated to NVIDIA CUDA soft hardware architecture we focus on differences between CPUs and GPUs in parallel computing, peculiarities of GPU computing, NVIDIA CUDA features and limitations as well as its programming and memory models.

For an actual practical application of CUDA, TechReport looked at Badaboom 1.0, which uses NVIDIA GPUs to transcode video. Elemental has released version 1.0 of Badaboom to the public, so we got on the phone with Elemental CEO Sam Blackman to learn about the software.

Michael sent in this (downloadable) game from the Bureau of Meteorology. In response to the research from the TCCIP the Centre for Disaster Studies in conjunction with the Bureau of Meteorology developed 'Stormwatchers' an interactive cyclone awareness game for children. The game was first developed as an interactive CD ROM package that was distributed throughout Queensland schools and was later modified for Western Australia. Throughout the late 90's the game was seen as an important educational tool for cyclone awareness and preparedness across Queensland.

Aftahours noticed some scented laptops from ASUS. Surely that would get really annoying really quickly. And then last but not least, Surf: Ocean fragrance. Hmmm. I am a PC and I smell like Feeeesh.

XbitLabs compared inexpensive quad-core CPUs. In our today’s test session we will compare Core 2 Quad Q9400, Core 2 Quad Q9300, Core 2 Quad Q8200, Core 2 Quad Q6600 and Phenom X4 9950 Black Edition. They also continue their 22-inch monitor roundup.
