Microsoft has unveiled their new operating system Windows Azure for cloud computing. Previously known as Project Red Dog, Windows Azure is a scalable hosting environment for deploying applications in Microsoft's cloud, said Microsoft Corporate Vice President Amitabh Srivastava, one of the key developers of the platform."Windows Azure is a new Windows offering at the Web tier of computing," said Ray Ozzie, Microsoft chief software architect. "This represents a significant extension" of the Windows computing platform, he said.

Meanwhile, Intel has demonstrated the first working Morestone MID platform. This sexy MID has been dropping jaws for more than a year now. Unfortunately, the plastic mock-up has always been a non-working, gutless model with little more than a glossy screen and backlight to demonstrate the form factor Intel's gunning for with its future Moorestown Mobile Internet Devices. That all changed today when a world's first working, Moorestown prototype hit the stage at Intel's Taipei, Developer Forum in the familiar hands of Anand Chandrasekher.

Here's some more about Google's new Google Earth software for the iPhone. "The idea of having Earth on a mobile device is something people dreamed of back to the Keyhole days and before," said Peter Birch, Google Earth's product manager, referring to the satellite imagery company Google acquired in 2004. "This is the first opportunity we've had to be able to deliver a great experience."

ZDNet have compared Mac OS X and Vista RAM usage. Because this system has a mere 1GB of RAM, I was curious to get a sense of how thrifty OS X Leopard is when it comes to memory usage. I was especially curious to see how Leopard compares to Vista, which as been slammed by critics as a resource hog.

The UNSW is threatening to axe their free wireless internet service due to illegal downloads. The university's director of IT, Michael Kirby-Lewis, said complaints about illegal downloading by students had risen from one or two a month to "a number a day", putting UNSW and students at risk of litigation for copyright infringement.

The BBC is following a shipping container around the world for a year. The Box has arrived in Shanghai, completing the UK-China leg of its global journey. It will stay in the Shanghai area until early in November when it will carry a new cargo to the US.
