Our favourite Federal Minister for Communications, Stephen Conroy has refused iiNet-backed Tech Wired Australia request to access the expert panel's recommendations on the NBN bids under the freedom of information act. The department sent a 17-page document to Tech Wired, listing its reasons for refusing the request, which in summarised form added up to the panel's report being exempt under sections 34 and 36 of the Freedom of Information Act. The exemption was based on the report being a document which was made for the purposes of Cabinet consideration and that it wasn't in the public's interest to disclose it since the factors against disclosure of the report outweighed the factors in favour of disclosure of the report.
Cisco has announced that it is "entering the server business". At an international launch event held over the company's telepresence video conferencing system, Cisco president and CEO John Chambers confirmed that the company had developed a series of blade computing systems, based around Intels' Nehalem processor, which will be called the Unified Computer System (UCS). Neither technical specifications nor pricing were revealed, however, with Cisco promising further updates in April. - June Aussie launch for Cisco's blades
Dell has officially unveiled their new luxurious Adamo laptop, described as "the pinnacle of craftsmanship and design". The Adamo laptop, pictured below, features a 13.4in screen and is available to pre-order from adamobydell.com with prices starting at $1,999. Described as "the pinnacle of craftsmanship and design", the system is available in Onyx or Pearl designs, features an edge-to-edge 720p glass display, is crafted from a single piece of aluminium with a scalloped backlit keyboard, and claims to be the world's thinnest laptop.
Another product that could be viewed as "the pinnacle of craftsmanship and design" is Thermaltake's Level 10 concept chassis. Thermaltake's Level 10 concept chassis was arguably the star of the show at CeBIT '09. Pictured below, the eye-catching enclosure - designed by BMW Group DesignworksUSA for Thermaltake's 10th anniversary - is unlike any chassis we've seen before. Unfortunately, Thermaltake aren't revealing any further details just yet - stating only that this concept would eventually become reality, and is on track to be fully detailed at COMPUTEX in June. Thankfully, the folks at BMW Group DesignworksUSA can't seem to contain their excitement. In a press release, they've stated that Level 10 is "a high-end gaming tower prototype that was inspired by the gaming word itself".
Apparently Ericsson can transmit data at more than 500Mbps over copper wiring........in the lab. Equipment maker Ericsson says it can use copper wiring to transmit data at more than 500Mbps in the lab—but it requires channel bonding and short line lengths. While fiber is the future, DSL and copper wiring may have some life left in them yet.
