Hosting Change - Saturday Morning Outage (93 Comments) (link)
 Wednesday, 27-May-2009  16:02:12 (GMT +10) - by Agg

As you may be aware we've been very kindly hosted by AusGamers for a few years now. Unfortunately due to changes beyond their control they can no longer host us, so we have to relocate the site by early next month - I've known for a couple of weeks now.

The deadline is fast approaching so I've been scrambling to find somewhere to move our hosting to within Australia, but so far haven't had any luck due to the relatively huge amount of traffic we do. So, for the moment I'm leasing a "virtual rack" setup in the states, which pretty much replicates the setup we have now, but with newer hardware and a bit more room for growth. This is on a month by month basis - we may be there a very long time, or we may end up finding something a bit closer to home. Performance testing and general feel of the forums seems fine on the new servers despite the physical distance.

So, we will probably have an outage this friday night and saturday morning of several hours while the site moves to the new servers. There's a kind've unavoidable phase where the latest backup from the current servers is transferred to the new servers, and given it's about 5GB of data, it takes a few hours, even between datacentres. The DNS will be updated so you should find yourself automatically on the new servers, and given Saturday morning is our quietest time, chances are you won't even notice the move. There may be some wrinkles that need ironing out during the following few days as I fine-tune the servers but hopefully nothing too drastic.

I just want to clarify that there's no bad blood between AusGamers and I. Being able to ride on their coat-tails for the last few years has been a huge advantage to OCAU and a massive part of why we were able to grow into the monster we've become today. Here's to many more years of growth, wherever we end up. :)
