Four Corners had an interesting show last night about internet security in the light of Australia's commitment to national highspeed broadband, thanks ikt. Info including more airing dates/times here, or you can watch it on ABC iView here. The superfast internet will provide enormous benefits to Australia, but both law enforcement agencies and the industry are rightly worried. Andrew Fowler reports on the very real threat posed by cyber crims.

However as a followup, SMH report that Australian Federal Police computers were hacked in response to their surveillance of a hacking forum. A spokeswoman for the federal police confirmed that the hacker broke into a computer system used in its investigation but denied that any evidence was compromised, saying the computer was not connected to other federal police systems.

XbitLabs checked out seven large HDD's. Some time ago we already discussed the first HDDs with 500 GB platters. Now time has come to compare side by side seven solutions with 1.5 and 2 TB storage capacities.

Meanwhile Metku have a gaming mousepad roundup. In the Assembly Summer '09, while by day we spend our time modding at the Dremel stand, we spend the nights gaming. So this time we decided to make some use of all of the gaming-time which we rack up at the event and write a Gaming Mouse Mat roundup. Included are: Ulti-mat Breathe F-X3, Ulti-mat Solid X3, Roccat Taito and Steelseries S&S.

From csimpson: In the course of my work, I got to go to Blizzard and have a sit-down with the single player campaign of Starcraft 2: Wings of Liberty. I thought all the regulars might be interested in checking out what's new with the game and what's stayed the same, so here are my thoughts. I've also put together a slideshow of screenshots from the single-player campaign and cinematics. I hope y'all enjoy it - there aren't too many spoilers! Kotaku also has some great coverage.

PCStats toured an LED factory, while Tweaktown went to the Flash Memory Summit in Santa Clara, California. This event is the premier expo where expert attendees learn about the latest developments in flash memory, learn to design with the latest flash chips, find new tools for developing flash applications, hear about the latest market trends, find new ways to replace disks in applications, identify new applications for non-volatile memory and find new methods for reducing power consumption.

FrostyTech report on new cooling technologies. This includes vapour chambers, thermoacoustic and phase change waterchilling, conduction cooled PCB and stirling Cycle Cryo Coolers among many others.

BFM sent in a story about an IM client donating CPU cycles without making it very clear to its users. Turns out those of us who have been using the IM client Digsby have also been donating our idle CPU cycles to research. The question is, have we been researching cures for cancer, or the next atom bomb?

Tweaktown have a ATI Catalyst vs NVIDIA ForceWare in Win7 performance test, while Guru3D compared game performance in Win7 vs Vista. With Windows 7 already released on MSDN as Final, Guru3D figured now would be a good time to look at ATI, NVIDIA, Single- and Multi-GPU game performance in-between Windows Vista and Windows 7.

Dave sent in this guide to making your own diamond thermal compound! Without the compound, small imperfections in the surface of the heat sink can render the heat sink almost useless and lesser compounds can actually insulate your processor. Thermal compounds that are available for purchase have remained unchanged for some time. So I descided it was time to reinvent my thermal compound needs with some diamond dust!
