Apple are apparently annoyed at Woolworths for using a logo they say is too similar to their own. Apple will have to convince IP Australia, the federal government agency that governs trademarks, to knock back Woolworths's application - first filed in August last year - to trademark its logo. Discussion here.

AirQ sent in some info about the directed energy system, aka a plane with a frickin' laser in it. More info here. New video released by the Air Force and Boeing Co. show what happens when a C-130H Hercules aims the Advanced Tactical Laser at the hood of car. In the video recorded Aug. 30 during a test flight at Kirtland Air Force Base, N.M., the laser melts the hood and sparks a fire. A press statement from Boeing said the laser "killed the vehicle." Another video on YouTube here, although this one seems to be in a 747 not a C-130.

InsideHW checked out 10 low-budget AMD motherboards. Since AMD presented some very interesting low-budget CPUs lately, next good question is: which motherboard should you purchase with that CPU?

Justin sent in this map of the USA, showing all the McDonalds locations. That's pretty amazing, and reminded me of how there's a whole bunch of not much in the middle of Australia. Between the tiny Dakotan hamlets of Meadow and Glad Valley lies the McFarthest Spot: 107 miles distant from the nearest McDonald’s, as the crow flies, and 145 miles by car!

Police are warning people to pay more attention and stop listening to music too loud when walking around the streets. "It's no surprise to police that with more and more people, especially school students, owning MP3 players, and lots of people walking and sending text messages, that we're seeing more and more collisions between distracted pedestrians and vehicles," Insp Parr said.

Google removed Pirate Bay from its index, but has now put it mostly back. Google has restored The Pirate Bay to its search engine index after briefly removing it last week following a copyright infringement complaint.

ArsTechnica have info on the Windows 7 Party Pack, thanks to a reader who got sent one after a stern email to Steve Ballmer. I recently caught wind of a promotion to host a Windows 7 launch party at select destinations across the globe and was initially very excited to be given the opportunity to apply to host a launch party. However I am very disappointed to read no Caribbean nations are represented in the selection of countries eligible for the promotion. Speaking of Mr Balmer, there's an interview with him here.
