So Apple launched their iPad yesterday and the response has been, well, mostly underwhelming. TomsHardware suggest some ways to improve it. I've had the opportunity to sit down and talk to several analysts and industry professionals about their thoughts on the iPad. Views seem to be split, but everyone appears to think the same: the iPad could have been so much more. Discussion and more info here.

Air New Zealand have apparently added USB ports and iPod connectors to every seat on their Boeing 777s. It took years, but the results not only put Air New Zealand in the front of the industry but also might just change how other long-haul airlines look at the coach cabin in the future. Knowing that if word got out about their plans they would lose part of their lead, they've secretly been working on a new layout that has finally been revealed to the public.

Bit-Tech took a detailed (hands-off) look at the EVGA W555 dual LGA1366 motherboard that is attracting so much interest lately. Created by a design team led by Peter 'Shamino' Tan, the W555 was first unveiled at the CES show a couple of weeks ago. However, the only shots we saw of the board were extremely blurry and covered with heatsinks. Fortunately, EVGA sent us these photos so we could take a closer look at how this monster motherboard is shaping up.

The US Department of Defence have researched the benefits of video games. Think interactive video games are a waste of time or more suited for children? Think again. Research under way by the Office of Naval Research indicates that video games can help adults process information much faster and improve their fundamental abilities to reason and solve problems in novel contexts.

It seems Ubisoft have a new DRM plan, and all future games from them must always be online, thanks Rohan. Responding to the public outcry for more draconian, inconveniencing copyright management, they have replaced Starforce and announced their new PC-only DRM system. One that requires you be permanently online in order to be able to play. Discussion here.

NASA have connected the International Space Station to the internet. Well, via a remote desktop setup, it seems. Expedition 22 Flight Engineer T.J. Creamer made first use of the new system Friday, when he posted the first unassisted update to his Twitter account, @Astro_TJ, from the space station. Previous tweets from space had to be e-mailed to the ground where support personnel posted them to the astronaut's Twitter account. Less tweeting, more colonising Mars, ta.

Meanwhile the last ever Shuttle night launch is scheduled for February 7th. In fact the current schedule (PDF here) shows only 5 missions remaining in total, with the Shuttles being retired after that. Shuttle Endeavour and its crew will deliver to the space station a third connecting module, the Italian-built Tranquility node and the seven-windowed cupola, which will be used as a control room for robotics.
