AMD have unveiled their 8 and 12 core Opteron processors. AMD (NYSE: AMD) announces availability of a new server platform featuring the world’s first 8- and 12-core x86 processor for the high-volume 2P and value 4P server market. The AMD Opteron™ 6000 Series platform addresses the unmistakable needs of server customers today - workload-specific performance, power efficiency, and overall value - while delivering more cores and more memory for less money.

TomsHardware have more info, thanks Kosta. PCWatch has some photos of motherboards for these CPUs, with up to four sockets. Anandtech checked out the new Opteron 6174 as well.

Intel have responded with their own 8-core Xeons. Largest performance leap in Intel® Xeon® processor history, with an average improvement of 3x across a range of benchmarks. Data centers can replace 20 single core servers with a single new Intel Xeon 7500 processor series-based system.

Again there's more info and a couple of videos on TomsHardware, thanks Kosta.
