Very quiet out there..

It's nearly the end for floppy disks, with Sony ending sales in almost all regions. The move was prompted by the wide spread of large-capacity storage devices such as USB flash drives. Other domestic manufacturers have already pulled out of the market.

The Hubble Telescope meanwhile celebrates its 20th birthday. The telescope's achievements are immense. Few instruments in the history of science have had quite the same "wow factor"; and anyone who looks at its iconic pictures cannot fail to question - just a little bit - their place and significance in the grand scheme of things. Viljar sent in this slideshow of images from and about Hubble.

Avatar fans will enjoy this tree of souls in London's Hyde Park, thanks JM. The UK's "real-life" Tree of Souls will be re-created using 20 miles of fibre optic "branches." Sensors within the tree's trunk will change the colour and intensity of its glow in response to movements made by visitors to the tree. Local Wi-Fi and Bluetooth networks will allow members of the public to upload images and messages to a screen built into the tree, as well as being able to make social networking status updates with an Earth Day message, via their mobile phones. In addition, by plugging portable music systems including iPods, MP3 players and phones into the tree, it will glow and pulsate in time with the music being played. Pictures here and here, video here.

Gigabyte are enabling their motherboards to charge your Apple products even when your PC is turned off. Many mobile devices can be charged via a desktop PC’s USB ports as long as the system is connected to an active power source, however this is not the case with the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. Even when the PC is being used and charging is enabled, these devices usually only draw a mere 0.5A for a trickle charge that can take 3 hours or more to fully charge the device. The benefits of GIGABYTE On/Off Charge are that users can reduce their charge time by around 40% while also acting responsibly and shutting down their PC system while it is not in use, e.g. while they sleep.

McAfee are offering to reimburse for damage caused by their recent patch problems, thanks mpot. "If you have already incurred costs to repair your PC as a result of this issue, we're committed to reimbursing reasonable expenses," the company said.
