SOGC are holding a free LAN in Sydney next weekend. We're holding a free LAN Party to say thank you to all our supporters and gamers, as well as saying goodbye to our old venue at the North Sydney ANZAC Memorial Club (Anzac ave, Cammeray, NSW, 2062). All the gamers need to do is bring their PCs, we provide powerboards, and network cabling! All they need to do is bring themselves and get ready for some awesome gaming with some great prizes too!

iiNet have confirmed they will be buying AAPT's consumer division for $60M AUD. The expanded customer base means iiNet will exceed Optus in the total number of DSL subscribers it has, bringing it to the second largest ISP for ADSL2+, behind Telstra's 2,244,000 subscribers. Optus remains the second largest ISP in Australia due to its hybrid fibre coaxial (HFC) network which it offers to broadband customers alongside DSL products.

Meanwhile AFACT's appeal vs iiNet will be heard this week. AFACT failed in its initial bid to hold the Perth-based ISP responsible for the alleged film piracy occurring on its network when the Court ruled in favour of iiNet in February. The anti-piracy group then appealed the decision. The appeals hearing will be held in front of the Full Federal Court on August 2.

ACMA have approved in-flight mobile phone use in Australian airspace. The regulator expected airlines to use in-flight carriers such as AeroMobile and OnAir, which have carrier licences under the Australian Telecommunications Act. iTnews believed the regulator was consulting with the Civil Aviation Safety Authority on the use of terrestrial networks in-flight, although such technology was yet to be trialled.

Chris spotted that The Sims 2 Double Deluxe is free on the EA Store at the moment. You'll need to sign up for an EA downloader account if you don't already have one. I don't expect this to last long so don't put it off for "later" if you don't want to miss out. Discussion here.

An experimental game controller uses hot and cold sensations to add to the experience of an environment. Based on the Peltier effect, these solid-state devices are easy to incorporate into objects of reasonable size, i.e. video game controllers. In this configuration, just announced at the 2010 SIGGRAPH conference, a pair of thermoelectric surfaces on either side of a controller rapidly heat up or cool down in order to simulate appropriate conditions in a virtual environment.

YouTube have raised the video limit to 15 minutes. Joshua Siegel, a YouTube product manager, said in a blog post that increasing the time limit had been the "number one requested feature" by contributors to the wildly popular video-sharing site.

Hackers at DefCon have been socially engineering big companies with great success. A first-ever "social engineering'' contest challenges hackers to call workers at 10 companies including technology titans Google, Apple, Cisco, and Microsoft and get them to reveal too much information to strangers.

Shadow communications minister Tony Smith will debate Conroy and Ludlam on the 10th of August. It is understood that Conroy and Ludlam agreed some time ago to the debate, but Smith was reticent in responding to the invite from the Australian Computer Society (ACS). Each speaker will be given a chance to outline their stance on ICT issues and will then participate in a Q&A session. Discussion here.
