We haven't mentioned Folding@Home for a while, but Sniper sent in this article about which video card is best for Folding. In case you've been out of the loop for a while, the real grunt work of Folding is being done by GPU clients nowadays. As it's taken quite a while for Stanford to perfect the GPU3 client and for Nvidia to provide a stable driver for its Fermi-based cards, we thought it worth taking a look at how the new batch of cards perform when folding. Remember, OCAU is Team 24 in folding. Discussion here.
Also on Folding, it seems that sometimes gamers beat algorithms at solving problems. Scientists have turned to games for a variety of reasons, having studied virtual epidemics and tracked online communities and behavior, or simply used games to drum up excitement for the science. But this may be the first time that the gamers played an active role in producing the results, having solved problems in protein structure through the Foldit game.
Algorithms and bots seem to be doing strange things on the stockmarket, though. Unknown entities for unknown reasons are sending thousands of orders a second through the electronic stock exchanges with no intent to actually trade. Often, the buy or sell prices that they are offering are so far from the market price that there's no way they'd ever be part of a trade. The bots sketch out odd patterns with their orders, leaving patterns in the data that are largely invisible to market participants.
HotHardware are building what might be the ultimate performance PC. On the pages ahead, not only will we be checking out the EVGA Classified SR-2, but we’ll be showcasing a pair of the most powerful processors currently on the market, along with the only 6-Channel CAS 6 memory kit available and an as-yet-to-be released case capable of housing it all. The end result is arguably the most powerful foundation for desktop PC platform an enthusiast could wish for to date.
Google have dropped Google Wave. I have to admit I never really looked into it, and it seems I wasn't alone. “Wave has not seen the user adoption we would have liked,” wrote Urs Hölzle, Google senior vice president for operations, in a blog post. As a result of the public indifference, “We don’t plan to continue developing Wave as a stand-alone product,” he said.
A former Chi Mei executive has admitted being involved with LCD screen price fixing. Chen-Lung Kuo, a former director of sales at the Taiwan-based Chi Mei, conspired with executives at other LCD manufacturers to suppress and eliminate competition by fixing TFT-LCD prices, the DOJ said in a one-count felony charge filed in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California in San Francisco. Kuo participated in the conspiracy from about April 2004 to December 2006, the DOJ said in a press release.
Jaw174 sent in this article about mobile phone CPUs. 1GHz processors on high-end handsets are all the rage now, but 1.5GHz puppies with more than one core have finished sampling and are being shipped to manufacturers. These are already desktop clock speeds, but how much is enough?
GamePron have a gaming news vidcast. The first edition of GamePron News has been prepared for your viewing pleasure, covering such things as the StarCraft II launch, Richard Garriott and his lawsuit victory, outlawed R4 cartridges, Adelaide’s AVcon and the fuss over a dancing zombie.
The Coalition have declared they would not support mandatory internet filtering, a stance that Senator Conroy has asked them to explain. Shadow Communications Minister Tony Smith tonight said a Coalition Government would not introduce a mandatory ISP filter – instead it would implement what he described as “practical and effective measures to enhance online safety and security” – including returning to the PC-based filtering approach utilised by the previous Howard Coalition government. But Conroy’s office immediately challenged such a proposal. Discussion here.
