Windows 95 turned 15 years old yesterday, thanks Timbot. In the marketplace, Windows 95 was a major success, and within a year or two of its release had become the most successful operating system ever produced. It also had the effect of driving other major players in the DOS-compatible operating system market out of business, something which would later be used in court against Microsoft.

Mpot spotted that Excom Education have shut down, so if you're expecting to do a course there soon.. think again. Excom staff have told iTnews they have been told the company would appoint external administrators at 4pm today and that their wages and entitlements would be paid in full. Also PlusCorp, who were involved with OCAU until 2007 and have changed hands several times, seem to have shut down now too.

Nik sent in this review of an alternative desktop. Some people visiting my GUI gallery may wonder where the desktop concept came from. Well before Windows, before the Macintosh, or even before the Xerox Alto, there was the Realworld(TM) Desk.

If you're a Joss Whedon fan (think Buffy, Firefly, etc), Anshalok sends word that he'll be in Sydney this weekend. Info here, here and here. Short notice so probably sold out. :/

BenchmarkReviews checked out Mafia II performance. Built on 2K Czech's proprietary Illusion game engine, Benchmark Reviews tests Mafia II using ATI Radeon and NVIDIA GeForce video cards. PhysX and GeForce 3D-Vision technologies are revealed, which shape and build this game into an immersive experience. Meanwhile, OCClub have a Lost Planet 2 performance preview.

Tarot spotted that big Thermalright case we linked a few days ago was at Computex in 2007. Don't fret, though, there are going to be drive bays and we're also assured that the final retail product will have wires running across the cooling array on the removable side-panel for mounting one huge fan or several 120mm units. Dunno if it ever came to light.

The EFF are so annoyed with Apple, they've had to come up with a new word. They've branded a new Apple patent as traitorware. According to Patent Vest, this Apple patent is aimed at identifying unauthorized users. Your iPhone might identify you through its camera or through its microphone, to verify if you are indeed the owner. It might user a biometric measurement, such as detecting the heartbeat to make sure it matches the authorized user's "heart signature." It could log keystrokes and GPS coordinates, and could even measure "vibration profiles," whatever that really means.
